Had some real 'wow' moments today; at the ITU's #AIforGoodGlobalSummit in Geneva. An incredible line up of speakers, ideas, demonstrations, opportunities and predictions. Illuminating and powerful moments for me included: - Tristan Harris from the Center for Humane Technology talking passionately about how, alongside amazing benefits, we can also get unwanted (and dangeous) outcomes from new technology, when the incentives for companies developing these technologies become misaligned with the broad interests of human kind. - Marco Tempest doing an incredible live interactive demo, illustrating how multi-modal AI tools can be used to simultaneously transform voice input 'live', whilst translating the speaker's body movements into movements of human characters on the screen; telling a story with multiple characters, voices, personals, with only one creator. - Gita Gopinath from the International Monetary Fund talking about the very real risks of economic instability as AI tools become pervasive within financial products and decision making, and those tools are unable to make 'human like' rational decisions when financial markets are hit with an economic shock - because these models have not been trained on that data - Vasco Pedro from Unbabel showing the power of non-invasive neural interfaces when combined with generative AI to unlock communication with patients unable to speak. Luis, a patient, was live streamed from his bed during Vasco's presentation, able to communicate through Unbabel's amazing technology despite advanced ALS preventing him from speaking. Luis' emotion was palpable, and brought tears to my eyes. - A keynote interview with Sam Altman - a fascinating perspective, and interesting to hear his responses (in some cases rather brief!) to some of the more direct questions put to him by Nicholas Thompson - Juan M. Lavista Ferres, Lab Director of the Microsoft AI for Good Research Lab, talking about the many ways in which AI is being used to solve intractable problems to benefit mankind. One example that resonated - simple yet powerful - mapping settlements across developing nations based on satellite images, pre and post natural disasters, to route humanitarian aid quickly and effectively in the wake of desperate need. It's clear that we're still at the beginning of this journey with AI. There's much to do to ensure that many benefit from AI, not just those in western economies speaking mainstream languages. But also plenty of opportunities, to harness AI for good to target improvements against the vast majority of the #UNSDGs. There were many other speakers and amazing discoveries and inventions that I've not mentioned. Can't wait to see what I will learn tomorrow. #AI #AIforgood #
