Every partnership strategy starts with Problem Buy-In. Problem Buy-In is when you have confirmation from your internal stakeholders that you're solving the right problems with partnerships. Partnerships can solve so many different types of problems. So you need to make sure that the problems that you're tackling are the ones that actually matter the most to your company, to your key stakeholders, and your customers. The goal of any company is to solve problems, right? The more you can solve for your customers problems, the more you can create value for yourselves and your partners. But there are many different ways to solve problems - partnerships are just one option. In order to partner, you must create more value for your stakeholders and partners than every other option.

The Art Of Alliance Alliances between companies, whether they are from different parts of the world or different ends of the supply chain, are a fact of life in business today. Some alliances are no more than fleeting encounters, lasting only as long as it takes one partner to establish a beachhead in a new market. Others are the prelude to a full merger of two or more companies’ technologies and capabilities. Whatever the duration and objectives of business alliances, being a good partner has become a key corporate asset. I call it a company’s collaborative advantage. A fruitful collaborations gives companies a significant competitive leg up. Like romances, alliances are built on hopes and dreams—what might happen if certain opportunities are pursued.Establishing many interpersonal relationships between partners helps resolve small conflicts before they escalate.Operational dissimilarities require working out—more communication than anyone could have anticipated. In value-chain partnerships, companies with different skills come together to build value for customers. Yet, too often, top executives devote more time to screening potential partners in financial terms than to managing the partnership in human terms. They worry more about controlling the relationship than about nurturing it. In short, they fail to develop their company’s collaborative advantage and thereby neglect a key resource.People will take the time to understand and work through partnership differences to the extent that they feel valued and respected for what they bring to the relationship.
