OSHA and MSHA civil penalty amounts going up Civil penalties issued by OSHA and the Mine Safety and Health Administration will increase approximately 2.6% on Jan. 15. The increase is legally mandated each year under the Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act Improvements Act of 2015. OSHA’s maximum penalty for willful or repeat violations will increase to $165,514 from $161,323. The minimum fine for a willful violation will be $11,823 – up from $11,524. The maximum fines for serious, other-than-serious, failure-to-correct and posting-requirement violations will be bumped up to $16,550 from $16,131. MSHA’s maximum fine for a flagrant violation will rise to $332,376 from $323,960. The Department of Labor determines annual adjustment rates via the Consumer Price Index for all Urban Consumers. In Jan. 2025 - OSHA raised penalties for workplace safety violations. Serious Violations: Up to $16,550 per violation. Other-Than-Serious Violations: Up to $16,550 per violation. Posting Requirements Violations: Up to $16,550 per violation. Failure to Abate: $16,550 per day beyond the abatement date. Willful or Repeated Violations: Up to $165,514 per violation. 2.5% increase from the previous year.

According to available information, in 2023, OSHA collected a total of $132.3 million in civil penalties from businesses for violations of their top 10 most cited regulations, representing a 30% increase from the previous year (Google AI). Seems like OSHA could almost pay for itself at some point...
