How do we value resilience in the face of increasingly common severe weather events? How do we see our communities and businesses through sustained power outages? Do we stick to the ‘old reliable’ diesel generator, or do we invest in Solar + Storage? A 2018 study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) addresses these questions and demonstrates that valuing #resilience can make Solar + Storage Systems economical in cases where they wouldn't be otherwise. Interesting read on the role of batteries 🔋 in the US power grid 🔌 in ft.com. California stands out for its advancements in implementing batteries in the production mix. My main takeaways are; - "Gas peakers" are transitioning to off-peakers. - "Imports/exports" will see significant impacts from solar and batteries during peak and extended peak periods. - Nukes will need to learn to throttle output during peak and off-peak times. - Basically solar is squeezing all other production forms in the peak hours -> Batteries will increase the possible amount of renewable generation in the grid, by a significant amount and do so fairly quickly.... -> Solar + batteries will increasingly affect the business cases of all other asset types including transmission cables.... #Energinet #batterystorage #renewableenergy #powergrid #energytransition #California #solarpower #gaspeakers

Imbalance cost, also known as deviation cost, refers to the financial penalty imposed on energy market participants who deviate from their pre-scheduled energy production or consumption levels. This is particularly relevant in renewable energy generation due to the intermittent nature of sources like solar and wind. Here's why imbalance costs occur: Uncertainty in forecasting: Predicting solar and wind power generation with absolute accuracy is challenging.Weather fluctuations, unexpected cloud cover, or wind speed changes can lead to deviations from forecasts. Grid balancing requirement: The electricity grid requires a constant balance between supply and demand.Deviations from scheduled production (either overproduction or underproduction) can disrupt this balance and necessitate adjustments. Market mechanism: To maintain grid stability, system operators need to take steps to compensate for imbalances.This can involve activating fast-response power plants or buying/selling electricity on the spot market. The costs associated with these adjustments are then passed on to the party responsible for the imbalance. #energymarket #renewable #energy #energyexchange

Talking about Low- and medium-temperature heat in buildings and industry in the addressing-european-research-and-innovation-challenges report written by European Commission it is mentioned: "For this heat category, solar thermal technologies also have an untapped potential, especially in southern European countries. Electro-thermal energy storage technologies (which use electricity to produce heat and then store it in a heat storage medium such as bricks) also have the unique ability to use electricity generation by intermittent renewables (solar, wind) to fulfil the large-scale and continuous heat demand necessary for industrial sites, complementing and also competing with (if they are not developed in a way that integrates them) heat pumps, for low- and medium-heat processes". #solarthermal #thermal #renewable

The #Quants will need to confirm, but it looks like new records in the WEM yesterday, with Rooftop Solar contributing 80.5% to underlying electricity demand on Sunday 10 November, 1:30pm..... Similarly, operational demand appeared to hit a new record low, at 474MW (of course, this is pre-battery load - which is good news for system security, but a bit like removing all of someone's ducks from their test batting average).
