I read 69 books this year. The link has the full list, along with everything I've read since 2020. Here are 10 I really liked from 2023: 1. The Children of Time series - I know, this isn't a single book, but this trilogy is worth your time! what would a sentient spider civilization be like? What about an octopus empire? The series is science fiction at its best. I'd put it up there with Liu Cixin's and Andy Weir's stuff. 2. The Rabbit Hutch: Tess Gunty's debut novel reminds me of David Foster Wallace best work: unsentimental, detail-engorged writing coupled with enough plot to keep you turning the page. It’s about the rustbelt Midwest, and all that comes with it. 3. The Tender Bar: As a dad with a son, JR Moehringer’s memoir is a must-read. It’s about fathers, sons, surrogate fathers/role models and the role place plays in growing up. 4. Where have all the Democrats Gone?: John Judis & Ruy Teixeira make a compelling case for how Democrats win now and in the future. 5. A Fever in the Heartland: Timothy Egan tells the story of how the Klu Klux Klan took over politics in Indiana, and Indianapolis specifically. It’s ugly and gripping. 6. Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow: I loved Gabrielle Zevin's novel. It takes a close look at the multi-decade friendship of two game developers. The tension between who you are and how you change is what drives this book as much as the plot. 7. Straight Man: Richard Russo’s story of a failed novelist/professor at a small college is as relevant today as it was when originally published in 1997. It was turned into a TV series this year starring Bob Odenkirk. It definitely deserved more than one season! 8. Of Boys and Men: As someone who works in education, I found Richard Reeves’ book compelling. Why are young men falling behind academically and professionally? What can we do about it? 9. There Are No Accidents: the word 'accident' implies randomness. However, a lot of what we label as 'accidents' are predictable. It doesn't mean the solutions are easy, but language matters. 10. Ball Lightning: If you like the Three Body Problem series, you will love this novel too. Liu Cixin explores what motivates scientific discovery, and how it interacts with the modern state's desire/need to translate discovery into weapons. https://lnkd.in/gWYE_edB
