📸🏊♂️🚴♂️🏃♂️ As a Triathlon and IronMan coach, I always emphasize the importance of training and nutrition. But there is one often overlooked aspect: sleep. Sleep is crucial for allowing us to train at our best and recover from the previous days' workouts. Without adequate rest, our bodies cannot perform at their peak. During the bike check-in before an IronMan race, I had the fortune to speak with a prominent professional athlete. When I asked for advice on how to improve my performance, he replied: "Sleep an extra hour at night; it's worth more than any new training technique or dietary supplement." The different stages of sleep, such as deep sleep and REM, are essential for muscle and mental recovery. It is advisable to sleep at least 7-9 hours per night to ensure optimal recovery. Additionally, if you have the chance, don't underestimate the importance of a 30-minute afternoon nap, especially on days with double training sessions. A modern Triathlon watch that measures sleep, its stages, and quality is a great ally. I was 10 lbs heavier than the weight I signed up to compete at just 12 hours before this picture. My scale had broken, and I should have known better, but my A.D.D. had me distracted. At 9 pm the night before I was scheduled to compete, our team checked our weight to make sure we were on weight and ready. To my utter amazement, I was 10 lbs heavy and was set to compete in 12 hours. Oh, and they do not allow for changes in weight class, which meant that I would be disqualified if I missed weight. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁? Lots of running, sauna, more running, more sauna, even more running, even more sauna. After that brutal last-minute 3-hour exercise push, I went to bed at 1 am, and I was still 2 1/2 lbs heavy. The last 2 1/2 lbs I lost while sleeping. When I woke up after only 5 hours of sleep, I was exactly on weight. I would not be able to drink anything or eat anything for fear of being overweight. When I showed up to weigh-in, I made weight with 1/4 lb to spare, and they immediately told me to go to mat 12 to fight. I didn't even have time to get a drink or anything, and I was parched badly. I had 4 matches, and with each match, I was feeling more exhausted. I won my first 3 matches and lost my last match because I made a careless mistake. 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀: Be ready in every way that you can for your toughest challenges. I wasn't! Even if you drop the ball, give all that you have! I was determined to make weight even if it took all night. 𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲. 𝗜𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀, 𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗲.
