Yesterday CIONET Belgium and Telenet Business joined forces to host what proved to be another fascinating session of the Telenet Business Leadership Circle. This time we tackled the so-called ‘cybersecurity control dilemma’, otherwise known as the difficult balancing act between user autonomy and organisational safety. Are the two compatible or do hard trade-offs have to be made? Rik Bobbaers (tech CISO at ING Global) and Sander Wouters (team manager and cyber catalyst at Telenet) revealed how they navigate this complex challenge today to shape the cybersecurity policies of tomorrow. They also asked our guests some pertinent questions: What can your staff members do on their devices? Can they install software, and visit any website they like, or are they closely monitored by the security department? For developers, who prefer as much freedom as possible, the dilemma might be even more pronounced. Interesting practical examples were discussed during the roundtable conversation. However, it also became clear that there is currently no obvious solution to this dilemma. However, that doesn’t mean that organisations can sit still when it comes to prevention and detection. There are solutions, techniques, policies and best practices that can bring you closer to where you need to be. We hope our guests left armed with some new knowledge, but even more than that we hope they’re hungry for more and ready to confront the dilemma within their own organisation. Open Letter to Cybersecurity Conference Sponsors, Event Managers, and Practitioners "Houston, we have a problem.” The recent display by Palo Alto Networks at Blackhat 2024, featuring real women used as objects, has exposed a glaring issue within our industry. This was not an isolated incident—there have been multiple troubling examples, some even more egregious. This issue is not confined to some entities alone; it reflects a deeper, systemic problem within the cybersecurity field. The practice of objectification appears to be a misguided strategy to achieve visibility and sales, perpetuated by a passive industry and, at times, tacitly supported by those who should be driving change. While Nikesh has commendably taken responsibility, the rest of us need to step in as well. We must address this issue at its core. The solution is twofold: 1. Increase Women’s Representation: We need to actively promote and support more women in leadership positions within cybersecurity. Their perspectives are crucial in shaping a more respectful industry culture. 2. Actively Challenge Objectification: As practitioners and leaders, it is our duty to call out and confront objectification whenever we encounter it. Proactivity is essential. This is a pivotal moment for our industry. We must act decisively to rectify these practices and foster an environment where everyone is treated with respect and dignity.
