At FOX-VPS we are making progress towards more sustainable operations, however we acknowledge our Scope 1 and 2 emissions remain high compared with other industries. In the coming years, we will continue to develop and prioritise our roadmap to net zero. In 2023 our scope 1 & 2 emissions increased by 12.3% due to a 14% increase in turnover. However this means that in terms of our carbon intensity metric (tCO2e per £million revenue) there was a 1.8% decrease year-on-year. There was a mix of actions in 2023 aimed at reducing our emissions. These included reducing and/or replacing ageing CNC equipment, continuing to replace fluorescent lighting with LED lighting within the factory, and optimising heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems. In 2024 we will conduct an assessment of the impact of solar panels, improving insulation, as well as the ongoing maintenance and discipline regarding efficiency such as checking airlines for leaks and keeping doors and curtains closed during winter. Our focused efforts in 2023 combined with the support of our employees, has enabled us to make some progress in continuing to understand and manage our CO2 emissions and we look forward to continuing this in 2024 and beyond. Radial bearings can withstand axial forces to a small degree, however, for greater forces, thrust bearings are employed. Thrust bearings are used to mitigate the axial forces in the rotating equipment.There are two main types of thrust bearings: equalizing and non-equalizing thrust bearings. These bearings play a crucial role in handling axial loads and ensuring smooth operation of rotating machinery. Equalizing thrust bearings employ a clever mechanism that distributes the load, especially uneven thrust loads, evenly across all parts of the bearing, thereby "equalizing" it. This equalization feature allows these bearings to handle misalignment to a certain extent without sustaining damage. The equalizing mechanism typically involves pivoting pads or levers that transfer the load evenly across the bearing surface. On the other hand, non-equalizing thrust bearings do not have this load distribution capability. Instead, they transmit the load directly to the bearing surface, which can lead to uneven wear and potential failure if the load is not evenly distributed. Both these mechanisms can be witnessed in the video at 1:20 to 1:30. The thrust collar, which is machined onto the rotor shaft, can exert forces in both axial directions. Each thrust bearing pad is designed to mitigate forces in one direction, typically compression. During normal operation, the aero/hydrodynamic forces generated by fluid flow on the impellers dictate the direction of the axial forces. However, in abnormal conditions, such as start-up, shutdown, or surge events in compressors, the axial forces can reverse direction. Equalizing thrust bearings are often preferred for normal operating conditions because they distribute the forces evenly and can accommodate misalignment. However, they are typically more expensive due to their complexity and additional moving components, which can increase maintenance costs and the risk of failure. Non-equalizing thrust bearings, on the other hand, are more robust, less expensive, and easier to maintain. They are commonly used for handling axial loads in the opposite direction during abnormal conditions or transient events. It's important to note that the choice between equalizing and non-equalizing thrust bearings depends on the specific application, load conditions, and design requirements. In some cases, a combination of both types may be employed to address the varying load scenarios effectively.
