We are pleased to announce the publication of the Raukawa Energy Innovation Project: Baseline Learnings and Insights report. The report highlights the phase-one outcomes of an initiative led by Raukawa in collaboration with Lever Room and He Kāinga Oranga, to address energy hardship in the South Waikato using data-driven strategies. 🏘 Through strong relationships and community connections, Raukawa identified nearly 300 whānau facing energy hardship in their rohe. With the support of Ara Ake, they installed MonkeyTronics temperature sensors in their homes to monitor cold exposure during the winter months. Some key insights found during the project: 🔸Health impact: Over 50% of tamariki in the cohort required GP visits for chest infections, asthma, or breathing problems. 🔸Living conditions: 58.1% of households endure cold conditions during winter to save on energy costs. 🔸Financial stress: 61.5% of participants feel stressed or worried about electricity bills. 🔸Budget trade-offs: 52.1% of whānau cut back on groceries or juggle other bills to pay for electricity. 🔸Widespread hardship: Through temperature measurements taken in living rooms and bedrooms, it was found that 98.8% of households experienced temperatures below the World Health Organisation's recommended minimum for more than one-third of the winter. This work details the tough realities of energy hardship in Aotearoa New Zealand and underlines the need for fair solutions and policies in the energy sector to support those most in need during the energy transition. 👉 If you are interested in learning more or supporting the Raukawa Energy Innovation Project, please contact the Raukawa project team at info@raukawa.org.nz Cristiano Marantes | University of Otago | Kimberley O'Sullivan | Nevil Pierse | Xavier Black | Rachel Dohig | Rebecca Mills | Maria Te Kanawa | Jonathan Barnard | Aamer Daji | Community Energy Network | Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment | Simeon Brown

Wishing everyone a "Happy World Environment Day"... 🌍🔋 Revolutionizing Energy Storage with Gravity Batteries! 🔋🌍 In the quest for sustainable and efficient energy storage solutions, gravity batteries are emerging as a game-changer especially in towering metro cities. 🌟 What are Gravity Batteries? Gravity batteries harness the power of gravity to store and release energy. The concept is simple yet ingenious: excess energy is used to lift a heavy weight to a higher elevation, storing potential energy. When energy is needed, the weight is allowed to descend, converting potential energy back into electrical energy through a generator. 🏋️♂️➡️⚡ Why are They Important? Renewable Energy Integration: They complement intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind by providing a reliable energy storage solution, ensuring a steady power supply even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing. 🌞🌬️ Longevity and Sustainability: Gravity batteries have a long lifespan with minimal degradation over time, making them a sustainable alternative to chemical batteries. ♻️ Scalability and Flexibility: These systems can be scaled to various sizes, from small units for individual buildings to large-scale operations for grid support. 🏢🌐 Innovations and Implementations Several innovative projects are showcasing the potential of gravity batteries: Energy Vault: Utilizing massive concrete blocks, this company has developed a scalable gravity energy storage system that can be deployed worldwide. Gravitricity: This UK-based startup uses old mine shafts to create gravity storage solutions, repurposing existing infrastructure and adding new value to abandoned sites. The Future of Energy Storage As the world continues to shift towards renewable energy, gravity batteries offer a promising and sustainable storage solution. By tapping into the fundamental force of gravity, we can create a cleaner, more resilient energy future. 🌿⚡ Let’s support and invest in these groundbreaking technologies that pave the way for a sustainable and efficient energy landscape. 🚀🔋 Energy Vault Gravitricity Ltd #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #Innovation #EnergyStorage #GravityBatteries #CleanTech #FutureOfEnergy

One of the many ways EPCOR supports sustainability in communities is by helping customers embrace green energy options. This includes microgeneration projects, such as rooftop solar panels. Microgeneration applications in Edmonton have doubled each year from 2020 to 2023, and our application process needed an upgrade to handle the exponential growth. A team of Electricity Operations employees, including Customer Relations Manager Andrew (pictured) and Senior Analyst Zareen, worked together to find efficiencies using data visualization. They identified trends, addressed gaps, and made improvements to meet the increased demands and manage customer timelines. Once microgeneration systems are connected to the grid, customers save on energy bills and reduce their environmental footprint. Well done, team!
