Concession Fees and MAGs..... Airport retailers do not pay rent in the conventional sense. They pay a percentage of turnover that varies by category / subcategory. If sales go up, the airport benefits because they are getting their cut. This is called the Concession Fee. To explain what this can be like, I want to share a personal story. A few months ago, on a lads night out (after a judgment altering amount of alcohol was consumed – not a lot these days!) I agreed to do a half marathon with them at the end of March. Of course, I put the training off and only started at Christmas. Thankfully, despite the Dystonia it is going reasonably well and my last long run was 8 miles. What has this got to do with Concession Fees?? Well…. The prospect of running 13.1 miles is always there at the back of my mind and the same can be said for concession fees for retailers. It is always a consideration for retailers. Every month it is being calculated by the retailer finance team and every month it is paid. This is a pressure that drives retailers to get brands to give better margins and better support. But what if sales go down? What happens then? This is where there is a sting in the tail! MAG’s…. Here are 7 things I’ve learnt while working in the Warehouse department: 1. Make time for people. Small talk with customers as you serve them can help build rapport and create opportunities for more meaningful conversations that can help you and the business. You never know who could give you your next best ideas for improvement. 2. Stay level-headed. A lot of times there’s more than one task demanding my attention and phone calls are constantly coming in. Keeping a cool and calm demeanor, staying organized, and assisting to the best of my ability helps me keep things moving. 3. Put out your best work everyday, consistently. I am aware that I’m holding up one end of the team and when each team member does their part right the whole team wins. I believe in being for the team. 4. Be humane when dealing with casual workers; exercising fairness when making payment negotiations for work they’ve performed under my supervision, communicating clearly and staying organized when calling upon them to do some lifting and handling. 5. Constantly look out for ways I can make processes better for improved efficiency. There’s always room for improvement. 6. Don’t overlook the small details, they have the potential to become big issues. I try to always cover my bases 7. Handle the paper work as it comes. Misplacing delivery notes and supplier invoices will not only affect your workflow but it has the far reaching consequence of potentially disrupting someone else’s business. There are many specialists who do not differentiate between the accounting department and its importance,and the sales department and its importance. I was one of them, but I discovered lately, that the owners of the sales department are people with a talent that an accountant cannot understand. Lets have simple example.If a pastry shop is taken over by an accountant, and a while later we ask him to increase the profits, what should he do? Let us see. He reduces the wages of employees, terminates the services of some of them, or reduces the size of the loaf and the rest of the products and keeps them at the same prices, which affects the volume of sales. I realized this from my experience through communications with some of the sales managers. Whereas if we hand over this pastry shop to a sales talent, what would the employer do if we asked him To increase profits, he would increase the size of the loaf and keep it at the same price in order to increase sales. He would also extends the working hours to make it two shifts instead of one, make pastries at reasonable prices, pack them, and send sales representatives to sells them to other markets. We see in our work areas that are full of markets, bakeries, groceries , or wearhouses that are full with costumers more than others, so we know that he is a sales person not an accountant. This means that the accountant has his important place in any company or ministry, but he does not interfere in achieving sales, expansion, growth, or increasing revenues
