Have you heard of CEO alpha? A survey revealed that 94% of private equity (PE) general partners believe that the leadership in their portfolio companies contributes significantly to investment returns. A CEO with the right leadership capabilities can deliver shareholder returns that outperform their industry peers. So, how do PE firms aim to achieve CEO alpha? They: a) Hire leaders who are execution-focused, decision-oriented, and financially astute; b) Establish robust performance dashboards that provide detailed performance reports; and c) Embed strategy into their daily operations, ensuring that strategic actions are bold, actionable, and executed swiftly. But it's not just for PE portfolio companies! Public companies undergoing rapid change programs can also apply these principles to achieve big results fast. During my time in PE, one standout method was the use of regular financial and operational dashboards. These tools offer a detailed view of performance metrics, presenting a comprehensive view of the business and allowing for swift adjustments when necessary. Public companies, take note! When utilised effectively, performance dashboards can be game-changers, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and facilitating optimal decision-making. Great article by my colleague Anastasia Belinskaya about the challenges we are all facing in attracting and moving leadership talent in the Private Equity markets today. Focus on value-investing, longer term exit horizons and the requirement for more operational transformation to drive value combine to determine that partnerships between investors and search firms need to underscored by more accurate planning up front, access to deeper pools of talent that are hidden from view and more science to support the art.
