Boring job of the weekend: get new casing for my car key. I’ve dropped my daughter at a party at Pizza Hut and have LOCKED myself down in a Tesco café while the lovely chap at Timpson saves me from a hefty key replacement. I mean, that rates pretty high on the dull adulting scale. But, actually, I rather like giving myself a boring job to do each weekend. 🤣 I might: 🧽 clean the fridge 🚗 hoover the car 🫧 wash the bins You get the boring picture. One really boring job a weekend makes me feel vaguely on top of the domestic dullness. Food shopping, hoovering and laundry don’t count. What really boring job(s) are you doing this weekend? #proofreading #editing #boringjobs

This week I spoke with the manager of a local DIY store. Our conversation was about job applicants and the firm's hiring. In short, the average applicant cannot provide basic skills for most positions in that particular location. As I've posted previously too many unemployed persons need assistance with math and English. In Southern California, bilingual speakers are most desired. With the 2nd language being Spanish. One problem mentioned is job training at that retail operation is via computer. This is a week-long indoctrination session. Followed by daily training required to work in any department in the facility. Along with general training, each department has specialized procedure and product training. Many new hires cannot keep up and self-filter from the position. Meaning they quit within a few weeks. Employees start at minimum wage. The Los Angeles County minimum wage is $15/hour. This big box store pays quarterly bonuses and twice-a-year hourly wage increases. Most of the employees are part-time. However, all employees may sign up for benefits after the probationary period. Another side of the job market is I'm told many small businesses are cutting hours. In particular the medical community. Including dental offices and firms providing support services to local hospitals and medical practitioners. This information is not based on formal detailed research. It is anecdotal derived from conversations with a limited number of those hiring and managing the hiring process.

We are having some work done on our house to (hopefully) resolve a long-term damp patch. So far, I've made the groundworkers several cups of tea and provided some biscuits and they've now gone off to have their lunch. However, I'm not checking when they went or how long they are going to be or whether they've stopped for a smoking break. Nor will I be watching to see when they finish. I trust them to get the job done - for the price we agreed. I'm not monitoring their hours or judging how hard they are working - and to be honest, I'm probably distracting them by trying to take a pic for this post! However, we generally don't do the same for cleaners. Their hours are monitored and we expect not to pay for any breaks they take. Why is that? Why don't we trust cleaners to get the job done? Even though we agree what we expect and have agreed on a price. What's the difference?

With schools breaking up for the summer holidays, some young people will be eager to find jobs. Hiring young people is a great way to help build their skills, experience and bring a new dynamic to your business. Never underestimate what knowledge a young person can bring to the workplace. However, there are laws around employing young people, including carrying out a risk assessment, and your local authority website is a great source of information. Here’s a few basic points from Ceredigion County Council, are you surprised with the milk one?
