Last week at our gala, we honored Alsco Uniforms as our Employer of the Year! Exodus started building a relationship with ALSCO in 2018 at its facility on East Vermont Street, downtown Indianapolis. We continued to work with ALSCO management through the pandemic and strengthened our relationship with them in 2023. This year, ALSCO has hired 27 refugees, many of whom are very vulnerable or came with little or no English ability, or prior schooling. ALSCO stands out by communicating their needs well and working closely with the employment specialists at Exodus. They use creative communication and training to ensure their employees are well-trained and know the expectations. They have allowed our employment specialists to attend pre-shift meetings and assist with interviews, training, and interpretation for refugee employees. ALSCO provides outstanding entry-level positions for our clients who are looking to start their first job in America. It means so much to our new neighbors to have a reliable job and an understanding employer. Exodus is grateful to have a strong relationship with ALSCO, and for all they do to help welcome refugees to our community!

Our work placement programme provides opportunities that allow migrants to not only develop their skills and gain local references, but also better prepare to apply for jobs in the future. Viviane Calixto, a participant in our programme with IDA Ireland, shares her placement story: "Open Doors helped me with my CV, but now I know how to update it on my own. I know what companies are going to ask in interviews because I went through this process with Open Doors. It was like a parent holding my hand, but now I can walk on my own." If your company is interested in offering work placements to migrants, refugees, and/or asylum seekers but you’re unsure where to start, get in touch with info@pathwaystoprogress.ie #PathwaysToProgress #Empowerment #Migrants #Refugees

Rarely examined topic, Migrant integration into cities and career re-contextualization was the focus of our AMD article. Takeaways for practise are below!
A Warm Welcome Helps Skilled Immigrants Rebuild Their Careers https://lnkd.in/g-gTzWHz The welcome #immigrants receive in cities plays a key role in how well they navigate geographical and social barriers in reestablishing their #careers in their new homes, according to an Academy of Management Discoveries article. “Unlike locals who may easily recognize and navigate the local city in search of career opportunities, #migrants must simultaneously manage the initial uncertainty and discontinuity in their lives and careers. To effectively apply and use their accumulated career capital locally, as newcomers they must quickly understand and familiarize themselves with the new city context (spatial and visual aspects),” wrote the authors, Jelena Zikic of York University and Viktoriya Voloshyna of Thompson Rivers University.

It doesn't cost a thing… 🤝🏾To support refugees in their quest to advance their careers. This is the message that my colleague and friend, Basma Alawee shared during a recent Working Group on Resettlement meeting in Sydney. 💡She made a powerful point by asking all those in upper management within their organizations to stand and look around the room at the refugee leaders sitting. 🤔It left me wondering, and now I want to ask my followers—in your capacity, how many folks have you helped advance their careers over the years through mentorship and sponsorship? 💡Let's all take a moment to reflect on how we can support those around us in their career journeys. #refugeesupport #careeradvancement #supportsystem #economicinclusion

“When I first arrived in Sydney, settling in took time, but the real challenge began when I started job hunting. Despite my over 15 years of senior-level experience in global organisations, I struggled to even secure an interview for mid-level positions. This harsh reality exposed me to the structural racism and biases that many migrants face in Australia. It became clear that the professional skills and experiences of migrants of colour are often minimised and dismissed. This difficult phase, however, taught me valuable lessons and ignited a passion for change. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of us—each a migrant with our own struggles—came together to form International Collective (IC), a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting migrants in their job search and professional development. International Collective was born out of the desire to address the challenges migrants face in the Australian job market. We recognise the systemic biases, such as assumptions about poor communication skills, lack of local experience, and doubts about long-term stability, that hinder migrants from securing meaningful employment. Our services at IC are designed to empower migrants at every stage of their job search. Through group sessions, we offer resume-building assistance, interview training, & negotiation strategies. We operate entirely online, making our services accessible to migrants across Australia. What drives us is the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their background. Every member of IC is a volunteer, united by a shared purpose: to help migrants build a better future. Hearing from those we’ve supported, knowing that our efforts have made a tangible difference in their lives, keeps us motivated. If our work helps even one person feel less alone and more empowered, we consider it a success. I’m proud to be part of International Collective, contributing to Australia’s ongoing journey toward greater equity and inclusion. While challenges remain, I’m committed to being part of the good fight for a more just and supportive society.” Monica Rawat Written by Sara Singh Tak

‘𝑰𝒕’𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒔, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒆𝒔.’ I love this quote by Caitlin Plunket of Borderlands. Also in their search for work, professionals with a refugee background (#statushouders in The Netherlands) especially benefit from a route that opens the front door to the employer. Networking, a warm introduction or a day of shadowing are just some of the instruments that have proven to be extremely valuable and helpful. They are also instruments that are not that difficult or expensive at all. Above all, it requires genuine attention, interest and a healthy degree of curiosity. Count your profit, as an employer or recruiter, in a labor market where there is currently a shortage and we can really use everyone's talent, knowledge, skills, insight and commitment.
