There are parts of our country where the state is completely failing in its duty to protect vulnerable children. This goes beyond failing individuals. It is a failure that affects whole communities, for generation after generation. So often these are already the most marginalised families. Impossible to overestimate how important poverty is as a driver for so many of the social problems ruining and holding back lives. People in prison know what they need to succeed after release. People mired in the inescapable depths of poverty know what a brighter future looks like and how to get there. We somehow think they need to be saved, or they can't be saved, or we don't know how to save them. That's the wrong way to look at it. What's the right way? Just ask. Ask them. They know. At Level, we ask people in prison across the country every day what they need to learn to not go back, to move towards a brighter future, to work towards healing in their communities, to not make more mistakes. And you know what? They know. They tell us. Most often, they say they need resources to get a better job. Often, they mention other things that will support both a better job and improving community. Things like communicating better. Understanding themselves better. Our mission is to provide access to those resources. We ask, they say, and we do our best to make it happen. How can we show our support for prisoners in our society? These individuals are often hidden away and forgotten, but they are still our loved ones and family members. We want them to come home and make a difference in our society. However, when the author was in prison, they struggled to receive responses from organizations that claimed to support them. If we truly want to call ourselves liberators and fight against oppression, we must begin by working to liberate those who are trapped in cages.
