Australia’s first proposed offshore wind farm, Star of the South, is making waves with some incredible updates! After five years of feasibility studies and consultations, this transformative project has refined its design to enhance efficiency and minimise its environmental impact. A key update is the reduction of turbines from 200 to 150, a move made possible by advancements in hardware technology. This ensures the project can generate significant power while minimising its footprint. Turbines will be positioned to avoid sensitive marine habitats, with the gap between the ocean and turbine blades increased from 25 metres to 35 metres. Based on bird flight data, this adjustment creates a safer zone for seabirds, preserving biodiversity. The project aims to reduce underwater construction noise through cutting-edge technologies, ensuring better protection for marine life, particularly whales. Onshore, a “no trench” method for cable installation will safeguard the beach and dunes, while underground transmission routes are being adapted to meet updated VicGrid requirements. At full capacity, this 2.2 GW wind farm could generate enough electricity to power 1.2 million homes, inject an estimated $3 billion into the Gippsland economy, and create 200 long-term local jobs over its 30-year lifespan. “With Yallourn’s closure in 2028, we’re stepping up to secure Victoria’s energy future while creating real opportunities for Gippsland,” said CEO Charles Rattray. For the global wind industry, this project serves as a testament to the potential of offshore wind in delivering large-scale, reliable energy while respecting ecological boundaries. Vineyard Wind 1 halts operations after blade breaks, scatters debris along Nantucket. On Thursday morning, a “significant part of the remaining GE Vernova blade detached from the turbine,” Vineyard Wind said in a release. After a Vineyard Wind turbine blade suffered damage on Saturday, scattering fiberglass debris in the ocean, the U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement issued a suspension order that halted construction and operations at the wind farm. Initially the blade “experienced a breakage approximately 20 meters out from the root,”. GE Vernova, “as the project’s turbine and blade manufacturer and installation contractor,” will be responsible for determining that root cause. Each Haliade-X turbine has a capacity of 12 to 14.7 MW, according to GE, and 107-meter blades — close to the length of a football field. The 800-MW Vineyard Wind 1 is a joint venture from Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners that began delivering power to the New England grid in January. The project is due to complete construction later this year. TNi Energy-BESS 1.20MW 10HR LDES, we've innovated a groundbreaking method that repurposes recycled lead-acid batteries, extending their life span to 20 years for energy storage purposes. Previously, the industry lacked a safe and environmentally conscious alternative to lithium-ion batteries. A giant floating wind turbine breaks loose at sea and drifts towards shipping: what now? ◾ Foreign agents have sabotaged a floating wind turbine and the towering structure has now escaped its moorings and is careening towards a tanker in a busy shipping lane. How do you regain control of it and avoid catastrophe? A competition has launched looking for answers. ◾ Floating turbines are taking wind power to waters and depths that were previously impossible to reach, opening up huge new swathes of ocean as a potential home for green power generation. ◾ Floating platforms can tackle these depths because rather than resting on solid foundations down to the seabed they are connected by mooring lines and anchors that can reach far further down ◾ Developer Corio Generation and Norwegian power producer Å Energi have launched a competition inviting start-ups to resolve a lingering and troubling question regarding the structures that keep the colossal turbines – potentially hundreds of metres tall – in place. What if they break? ◾ “While it may be very unlikely to happen,” the problem of how to take back control of a floating wind turbine that has escaped its anchorage remains “one of the challenges to be solved” for the industry, said Jarle Dyrdal, head of offshore wind at A Energi. ◾ Corio and Å Energi, which are partners on a floating offshore wind project in the Norwegian North Sea, are he said therefore “seeking input on how to develop innovative and effective approaches to tackling such a scenario.” ◾ Floating wind turbines often operate in “high-risk areas, such as seismic zones and busy shipping lanes,” says a briefing for the competition. This raises the “significant challenge of managing emergencies, including partial or complete mooring system failures.” ◾ “This calls for innovative solutions that ensure the safety of personnel, protect assets, and preserve the environment, all without necessitating the physical transfer of offshore personnel to these compromised structures.” ◾ The winner of the competition will be announced at the Floating Wind Days conference in Haugesund, Norway, at the end of May, and then work with experts at the companies to further develop the winning concept.
