❄A new iceberg, measuring about 145 square miles, has broken away from Brunt Ice Shelf, Antarctica. ❄The Brunt Ice Shelf is where UK's Halley research station is located, and is the third such event in the past three years. In 2017, due to concerns over ice instability, the British Antarctic Survey relocated Halley’s buildings on skis to a safer location. ❄The increasing activity and rapid loss of ice from the Brunt Ice Shelf over the past three years has triggered a rapid acceleration in the shelf's seaward movement, and such icebergs can trigger a navigation hazard. ❄Satellite imagery and GPS has tracked this movement, showing that such climate research is vital in understanding sudden and major changes in Antarctic ice shelves. ❄Join our research database at Expedition Science to be a part of the action for climate change: https://lnkd.in/eViqWcC2

Antarctica’s sea ice has reached alarming lows for a second consecutive year, with 2024 seeing less frozen ocean than the same time last year. " Antarctic ice floes extended further than ever recorded this southern winter, confounding the world’s most-trusted climate models. “It’s not expected,” says Professor John Turner, a climate expert at the British Antarctic Survey. “The world’s best 50 models were run and 95% of them have Antarctic sea ice decreasing over the past 30 years.” The winter ice around the southern continent has been growing relatively constantly since records began in 1979. The US National Snow and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC), which monitors sea ice using satellite data, said this week that the year’s maximum was 1.54m sq km (595,000 sq miles) above the 1981-2010 average. The past three winters have all produced record levels of ice. “Not every location on the Earth is having the same responses to climate changes. The fact that ice in one part of the world is doing one thing and in another part ice is doing another is not surprising. ❄ Sea ice plays a crucial role in our global climate system. It reflects sunlight, regulates temperatures and supports unique but vulnerable ecosystems. However, with climate change accelerating, our sea ice is shrinking at an alarming rate. ❄ A new paper, published last week in Nature Geoscience and led by Alex Bradley (British Antarctic Survey) and Ian Hewitt (University of Oxford) has identified a new tipping point in the way Antarctic ice sheets melt. Seawater, making contact with the underside of the ice sheet, can cause localised melting of the ice - further exacerbated by warming temperatures. This has been described as ‘missing physics’, as current models do not have the ability to simulate melting beneath the ice sheet. The results of this new work in such models could give more reliable estimates as to the speed and extent of melting ice.
