Today is the deadline to apply for the European Green Capital and European Green Leaf Awards. This competition highlights local governments taking action to improve the environment and engage in mitigation and adaptation efforts in response to the climate crisis. So far, I have learned that Poland will definitely be represented by two Upper Silesian municipalities facing major air quality issues: Rybnik in the category of larger cities and Pszczyna in the category of smaller towns. Moreover, Pszczyna will focus on addressing the topic of urban ecosystem reconstruction. I hope both applications will be successful! Perhaps there are other communities participating that I am unaware of. In that case, I extend my wishes for good luck! 🏞 The Italian government is backing a project to double the size of the Peschiera–Le Capore aqueduct. Partially funded by EU money, the project raises environmental concerns as it risks breaching EU nature directives and threatens six Natura 2000 sites. 💧 The EUR 1.2 billion investment also risks over-exploiting local water resources and upsetting the ecological balance of nearby rivers. Non-governmental organisations and local groups have denounced the alarming lack of public participation and stakeholder engagement, with the concerns of local communities left unaddressed. Unfortunately, the doubling of the aqueduct reflects a wider trend in Italy. In fact, Peschiera–Le Capore is one of several high-impact projects included in the recovery plan that have been fast-tracked under a new environmental impact assessment procedure adopted by the Italian government. ℹ Read more: https://lnkd.in/deJHDhf5 Walter Meloni

🌱 Yesterday was #worldpeatlandsday! Earlier this year, the Lab, WaterLANDS and Climate Catalyst (along with a dozen other leading #climate, #conservation and #finance organisations) launched 'Investing in Peatlands' the first publication of its kind aimed at #funders and #investors. The report explores peatlands as an emerging asset class, and peatland restoration's largely untapped potential as a #naturebasedsolution with the ability to deliver substantial returns across a range of social/economic/environmental #impacts. The report features a number of pilot case studies from around the UK and Europe that showcase different models, and indeed in the almost 6 months since publication, we've seen significant progress in many of those lighthouse projects. 🌲 Ensuring the Preservation of Estonia's Forests 🌲 In a recent CEE Bankwatch Network blog post, together with Farištamo Eller, we shed light on concerning developments surrounding the construction of Rail Baltic. Specifically, we highlighted how in the compensation area for Rail Baltic's construction (a new capercaillie protection area), the Environmental Board issued logging permits and the State Forest Management Centre carried out logging. These actions, among others in recent years, raise significant concerns about the preservation of Estonia's protected forests. It's imperative that we address these issues and advocate for sustainable management practices to safeguard Estonia's natural treasures.
🚂 Rail Baltica, the ambitious railway project set to connect the Baltic states as part of Europe’s modern rail network, promises to boost regional development and integration. But despite assurances that habitats would be protected during the construction of Rail Baltica, forests in protected areas have been cut down. This threatens the future of the western capercaillie, a protected grouse species. The Rail Baltica project is just one of many alarming cases wreaking havoc on Estonia’s precious ecosystems and yet another example of economic development taking precedence over environmental concerns. Projects financed with EU funds must not contribute to environmental harm. 👉 Read more in our latest blog post: https://lnkd.in/dCGCenuE Eesti Roheline Liikumine / Estonian Green Movement-FoE

🌏 Eco-Renaissance in the Mediterranean: Ignite the Change! Facing ecological challenges with wisdom and action. The Mediterranean, our blue heart, is at a crossroads. 🌱 Only 15% of European habitats thrive in their natural glory, with ecosystems like forests, wetlands, dunes, and coastlines facing critical risks. This is a clarion call not just for environmentalists, but for thinkers, innovators, and leaders. 🇪🇺 The EU's Nature Restoration Law is more than a policy - it's a promise for the future that puts in ecological thought and practice at the center of the agenda. Its goal: a resilient, biodiverse nature, integrated with climate action. 🤝 We, at the Natural Heritage Mission, are a mosaic of minds - scientists, activists, practitioners. We are inspired by the new EU restoration policy we plan to tackle restoration of ecosystems through our Mission activities, including educational programmes to facilitate policy implementation. Our goal is to paint a future where nature doesn't just survive, it thrives. 👉 Join our knowledge and Action-Driven Community! What are the key steps that need to be in place to facilitate investment into blue carbon ecosystems? Here’s what we uncovered during our recent project in Madagascar. We’ve been working with The World Bank and Andrew Cooke and the team at Resolve to identify long-term financing pathways that will lead to the conservation of Madagascar’s blue ecosystems, particularly mangrove forests, seagrass beds and coral reefs. Through consultations and finance pathway analysis, we have identified the things that need to be in place to accelerate and scale up existing blue carbon and nature-based solutions financing while activating existing and emerging markets. 1️⃣ Leverage experiences from marine protected areas and terrestrial carbon finance. 2️⃣ Align with international commitments and nature markets. 3️⃣ Focus on channeling funds towards community-led projects for habitat conservation, sustainable livelihoods and carbon emissions reductions. 4️⃣ Bolster investment readiness. #naturebasedsolutions #environment #Madagascar #blueecosystems

📣 Stop the destruction of our European Green Lung! With today’s action in front of the Berlaymont building in #Brussels, NGOs EuroNatur Foundation and Agent Green, together with more than 106,000 concerned EU citizens demand EU Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius to "Stop the illegal logging of Romania's ancient #forests. Save our natural heritage!" It is directed against EU Environment Commissioner persistent inaction to take effective measures against the destruction of #Europe's last primary and old-growth forests - despite four years of ongoing infringement proceedings (➡️ learn more in the comments). “The problem is systemic and, therefore, cannot be solved at a national level. The issue must finally be prioritised after the EU parliamentary elections at the latest. The new Commission may not repeat the mistakes of the old one," stresses Susanne Schmitt, Project Manager for Forest Conservation at EuroNatur. 🗨️ Link to the press release in the comments! On the sidelines of #CMSCOP14, the Convention on Wetlands joined the Global Partnership on Ecological Connectivity which aims to ensure that areas of importance to migratory species are identified, protected and connected. This engagement offers a platform for the partners to connect, exchange valuable insights, and share best practices. The aim is to inform both technical and policy processes while mobilizing resources to support on-the-ground activities of the Parties. Additionally, this initiative aligns with the Convention's commitment to promoting networks of Wetlands of International Importance and fostering cooperation in the management of transboundary sites among countries. ➡ https://lnkd.in/eMVeqj-E #WetlandConservation #WetlandsMatter
