A simple handshake can hold different meanings! In Germany, a firm handshake (called a Fester Handshake) with direct eye contact is expected, while a light handshake with a slight bow is more appropriate in Japan. In some cultures, greetings might involve a kiss on the cheek (France) or a wai (bow with hands clasped) in Thailand. Understanding proper greetings shows respect and avoids misunderstandings. #GlobalEtiquette #CulturalAwareness #YAxis #YAxisstudyabroad

"Housework is what a woman does that nobody notices UNLESS she hasn't done it". Have you heard of this phrase/quote? I am sure there are those who can resonate with this, right? 😎 Don't get me wrong here, I am not complaining (maybe a bit 😇). I just wanna announce how relieved I was that last night was the last Raya dinner that I had to prepare. Raya (Syawal month) is ending and there will be no more "open houses" to attend or buffet spread to prepare at home. To respond to Mohamad Afendi Othman's question last week - how long do you celebrate Raya? A week or a month? My answer would be - a month. This is the only time where you get to "bond" with relatives and friends whom you don't normally get to see except at weddings or funerals (which are not often). Do I get tired? Of course, but it was worth it as the feeling of strengthened silaturahim (friendship) and relationships are forged. ❤️ Just like in training. As trainers, we don't complain of the exhaustion after a 2 or a 3-day program. It just felt "good" that we have shared or imparted knowledge with the class. It is more rewarding when the class is appreciative and their employer is happy with the training outcome. 😊 Back to the "kitchen sink" scenario; I am glad that my other half is willing to continue when I get tired. Raya comes once a year, so we should not complain with the extra "housework" kan... Take care and stay safe (in this unpredictable weather). #housework #passion

As a foreigner who plans to live and work in Chiangmai for the long term, a major principle I practise in everything I do is cultural sensitivity. At the personal level, I am actively learning conversational Thai at a language school. I live with a local family who graciously share with me their daily life and help me practise using conversational Thai as well. At the professional level, I study movements in traditional Thai dance (besides classical Chinese dance) through my own research, observation and movement practice sessions. This has helped me appreciate the local culture, history and values much better. Why is doing these important for the work I do here? The concept of preventive healthcare is foreign to many people here. For people to effectively learn and practise actively taking care of their health through exercise, they need to be able to experience why it is good for them and how it can be done in their daily lives - and this necessitates you to be culturally sensitive AND relevant. Put plainly, just because your way of exercising is good for you, doesn't mean it is the same for others. #fitwitheleanor #preventivehealth #learning #learning #relationships #healthcoaching #communityhealth #reflection

Communication Coach l Helping you master the art of great, clear communication in all aspects of life.
A cat recently took up resistance on my veranda. Living in Bali, it’s not uncommon for a dog or a cat to decide to adopt a person or family as their own. It is a conscious decision on my part not to have any pets. Much as I love animals, I also really enjoy the freedom I have by not having any. However, this cat was so big and had such a massive, bushy tail - most unusual for a Bali cat! - that I was intrigued. I wondered where he had come from and if he had a family. I tried several times to get close enough to give him a stroke but he always shied away. Then one day he appeared on my veranda, as had become his habit, only this time he’d clearly been injured. His fur was matted in blood. I tried to approach him to get a better look so that I could help him somehow. But he remained shy and would not let me close. I’ve been keeping an eye on him and he does seem to be healing, albeit slowly. However, this got me to thinking of people that want help but won’t let anyone in. Sometimes it’s hard to know who to trust. And when you’re the one trying to support someone in such a situation, it can seem challenging. How best to support someone who is having trouble relaxing and opening up? Some ways I practice are: Holding a calm and relaxed space full of patience and empathy; Listening attentively; Meeting their pace and energy. What do you do to help someone who wants to open up but finds it challenging? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. #coachingskills #communicationcoach
