I genuinely believe we are now at a point where there’s a big hidden risk to many businesses when scaling digital products. As products push for more rapid feature releases to equal or better competitor offerings, I see a real danger that systematic design and UX could be neglected. If design don’t get a stake in product prioritisation or systems thinking and design systems aren’t matured and adopted, teams will inevitably scale on inconsistent experiences, bad UX, fragmented user journeys and a broken brand identity. The immediate prioritisation of a features arm race will provide the short term gains for product teams and individuals but at a hidden higher long term cost unbeknown to the business. Although features are important, I don’t see them as a products differentiator. They can inevitably be copied and what really matters is the experience had with these features. If design debt is copied, piled up and products become harder to use then the overall quality and user experience will be compromised and ultimately be worse than competitors. It will also become much much harder and costlier to change in the future. With a rush to optimise product operations I wonder how much scalable, user centred design plays in the thought process and backbone of sustainable growth strategies. It will be interesting to see how many products evolve to balance speed, features and the overall user experience in the future. #DesignSystems #ProductOps #UX #Growth
