Some Saturday night food for thought…. 💭 Today, one of my team members and I were discussing a new student she just completed a consultation for. She expressed that he has some behavior challenges, so we talked about some ways forward to make his sessions meaningful — - Focus on quality vs. quantity — rapport, trust & self-regulation vs. the number of math problems you get done during a session. - Working on building the student’s confidence for learning with preferred tasks and preferred content (ex: write words about dinosaurs because he loves dinosaurs). Breaks, lots of *positive reinforcement* & just getting to know areas of need and skills he already has! - Keeping in mind adaptivity, flexibility, & creativity! Here are some questions I posed to my team: “Do I as a special educator need to use tech to enhance the efficacy of a child’s learning experience?” “How am I structuring a session to keep a child engaged and motivated?” “What specific prompts/scaffolds/etc am I using to redirect students & increase understanding?” We work with families through an individualized, strengths-based approach to provide instruction that is accessible to all minds. #specialeducationmindset

In Grade 4, we've been on a journey of space exploration where they unraveled the mysteries of our universe. 🪐 Our approach has been more than just learning facts and skills; it's been about fostering conceptual understanding by delving deeper into inquiries & discussions as a vehicle for sharing, documenting, and analyzing. 🌠 We continuously expanded our "Concept Bank"; a resource that has allowed students to reflect on the concepts they've explored and to guide their development of generalizations/conceptual understandings.💡 As teachers, our role has evolved into that of facilitators by asking probing questions that encourage synergistic thinking such as "What makes you say that?", "Can you tell me more about it?", "Can you give me an example of that?",etc... to encourage them to expand on their thinking and see their understanding in action.
