[PDF] Science and technology in twentieth century American life Christopher Cumo digsell https://lnkd.in/ecmMQh99 The twentieth century witnessed the greatest changes in technology and science that humans have ever witnessed. These occurred rapidly and affected such a broad range of people. Scientists, inventors, and engineers built upon the great inventions of the 19th century to expand the reach of modern technology – for a citizen in 1900, communication, transportation, and agricultural was still primarily local activities; by 2000, an American citizen was part of an interconnected global community. These developments in science and technology were also important in the social and cultural changes of the period. The Great Depression, the World Wars and Cold … Read More » https://lnkd.in/e2d2mRWQ

🏛️ Many of the institutions we take for granted today were shaped in a time when society shared a single cultural narrative. It's worth taking a moment to think about how this came about. In the wake of war, the 1950s and 60s saw the rise of new technologies such as television and mass media, which played a pivotal role in creating a shared reality🔮. These media platforms were instrumental in bringing together even the most diverse communities, setting the stage for the institutions we're familiar with now. Never before in human history had such a mono-culture been possible. Then the internet arrived and shattered this shared worldview into countless pieces. The institutions born from a once-shared reality now face the challenge of a fragmenting mono-culture, harking back to the diverse nature of pre-modern humanity. However, today's people are equipped with digital tools that amplify their voices 🎙️. The voices of everyday people are rising against the backdrop of weakening institutions. Who will prevail? We stumbled upon this #essay by Florence Okoye, and immediately found symmetry with our work here at NewComm, specifically in terms of our innovative "Literary Science" #framework. As written by Florence Okoye 👇🏾 "As we’ve seen in an age of austerity, the #sciences are not immune from changes in #policy. From #history, we’ve seen how the sciences can contribute to as much as be damaged by dehumanising #ideologies. For those of us who exist as #minorities due to #race or #sexuality, it is radical genres like #AfroFuturism that can drive engagement as theorists and practitioners, inspiring new #technologies and #methodologies which will ultimately lead to innovative discoveries." 📌 Central to our NewComm approach is "Literary Science": here, the stories, especially those from #marginalizedvoices, are studied not just as #literary works but as powerful #designtools for #socialjustice. We #design and implement #programs that immerse #learners in these stories, fostering a deep understanding of diverse #BIPOC experiences. This immersion prompts our learners to meaningfully engage in #criticalthinking, extensive #communityresearch, and the design of #socialimpact projects in partnership with local #nonprofit and #forprofit companies. 💡 Ultimately, our #innovation is a true movement to bring a more practical and professional approach to the #humanities and transform the world around us. Reflections on #citizenscience after attending the 42. Focus on Open Science in Budapest: Citizen Science is a concrete way of working with Open Science. And the science in Citizen Science can be more than traditional research with a focus on datacollection. In Citizen Science there is both researcher and citizen perspectives and also a societal perspective. So when working with Citizen Science we must be clear on the different perspectives to manage expectations from both academia, citizen, and society. In the bigger picture classical CS collection of data (contribution) is shifting towards a higher degree of co-creation. Research Libraries can play a big part in this transition. As a science centre, we believe that science is for everyone. We’re all about celebrating science as part of our everyday lives – after all, ingenuity, science and technology could have the answer to many of the world’s problems and help to make a better world. Today marks World Science Day for Peace and Development, with a special focus on ‘building trust in science’. Building trust takes time. As much as we want to place ourselves as a trusted resource for everyone, we recognise that people are on individual journeys and one size doesn’t meet all needs. And we know that science centres and museums are part of a wider system that has historically excluded certain groups of people due to bias in society, and academia. Diversity of experience, dialogue and debate is at the heart of what we do. Working alongside our ‘Include Everyone’ pledge, our ‘Open City Research’ area of work tries to overcome challenges that separate people from scientific research, and give our audiences the opportunity to be part of the scientific process. It’s about challenging what it means to be a science centre. Discovering new things and creating new knowledge and building trust in science together. Please do reach out to us, leave us comments, send us letters - let us know where you’re at, what you’re curious about, and what you need to find trust in scientific discoveries.

Just posted! Take Action to prevent proposed cuts to the NSF and other science funding agencies: https://lnkd.in/gFmzBpqB On May 16, the House Appropriations Committee announced top line numbers for fiscal year 2025. Defense funding is to increase by 1%, and non-defense funding is to be cut by 6%. The cuts will affect the agencies that fund our research and support our students. The NSF, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, Department of Education, and National Institutes of Health all fund programs critical for supporting the work of mathematical scientists and our students on university and college campuses. Fiscal year 2024 budget has not been kind to the NSF and we are already seeing cuts to programs we care about. As just one example, the number of Graduate Research Fellowships fell from 2554 (across all fields) in 2023, to 2036 awards in 2024. In math, the award numbers are 102 and 83. We must push back against further cuts in 2025. It only takes about a minute to Take Action! This is best done before June 12, and will not be relevant after July 9 (assuming Congress sticks to their calendar). Spreading this around to your colleagues is much appreciated. Thank you for all you do to help ensure stable and increased funding for mathematics research and education.
Take Action
