"I can't drop out of uni, but I hate my degree." I remember my friend telling me this after first year. That's what I loved about the US academic system: you don't have to declare your degree until junior (3rd) year. But in the UK, we have to choose a degree at 17?! It's so much pressure to figure yourself out at such a young age. So, here are my tips for falling back in love with your degree: ➡️ Choose modularity. For most subjects, you can choose 25% of modules outside of your set subject. Choose modules in the business school, or science, or humanities. Anything you find interesting. ➡️ Remember that it gets better. First year is comprised of mostly compulsory modules so 2nd and 3rd year gives you the chance to tailor-make your degree. ➡️ Listen to podcasts, TV shows, and documentaries about your subject. There are other ways to stay engaged with your degree content that aren't 1,000-page textbooks. Find the ones you enjoy and stick to them. ➡️ Go to professor office hours and explain how you’re feeling. Sometimes just talking to your lecturer can help you find coping tips. ➡️ Go to all your seminars and lectures. Otherwise, it's easy to fall off the bandwagon and the recorded lectures are very dull! ➡️ Study with someone from your class. Find someone who motivates you and explore new study spots until you find one that works for you. ➡️ Use your notes for all your essays. Use the content you’ve been taught - teachers love to see that you've been listening to them. ➡️ Realise and accept that essay marking (at UK uni) is out of your hands. Essays at US uni are marked by your lecturer, but they're marked by an external board in the UK. Just turn in your best work and that's all you can do. ➡️ Get an internship in your field. You could end up working on a cool research opportunity that will help you put what you've learned into practice. ➡️ Don’t discuss grades with your friends. So not worth the frustration. ➡️ Don't pull all-nighters in the library (if you're not a night person). It's so not worth the hangover feel the day after. Live a normal person schedule. ➡️ Ask yourself, what skills is my degree giving me? Where can I use these? Your degree will be helpful to you, regardless of how much you enjoy it. Uni is about trial and error and not everyone loves their degree. You can, of course, pull out if it's too much or swap degrees in the first few weeks of freshers. But, if not, try some of these and let me know if they work. 💫 What would you add? -------------------------------------------------------- Follow me for more US/UK university & study abroad tips! #degree #unistudent #studentips #studyabroad #ukuni #uscollege

Trent University With the Bridge program l, you’ll begin your fall term courses with more confidence and a greater sense of belonging. Research shows that success in first-year is key to a successful university experience – and a transition program like the Bridge can help. Here is what some former students had to say about their experience with the Bridge: “The Bridge Program may have been the best decision of my life so far. I have been given the opportunity to build strong friendships, understand university-level work, and really find myself.” “After completing The Bridge Program I have learned more about my study skills and how to retain information rather than just memorizing answers.”

What an unforgettable semester it’s been! Hi everyone, I’m so excited to share that I’ve successfully completed my exchange semester at Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi / Middle East Technical University with a decent 3.34/4.0 CGPA. Studying at such a prestigious and highly respected university has been an amazing experience and one I’ll always cherish. It wasn’t all smooth, though. Starting at a new university known for its rigorous academics was a challenge. There were moments when things felt overwhelming—late nights in library, tough deadlines, and even a few setbacks. But those challenges taught me how to push through, and now I can look back, laugh and say it was all worth it. I couldn’t have done it alone. I want to thank my study partner, Zulfiyya S., for being such a great source of support and encouragement throughout the semester. We had moments of stress, moments of sadness, and even moments where all we could do was laugh and walk around Devrim :) —but through it all, we never gave up on giving our best. I also made incredible new friends from all kinds of backgrounds, all of us here with the same goal: to learn and grow. This semester has been full of emotions, challenges, and triumphs. As this chapter closes, I feel so grateful for everything I’ve experienced—the knowledge, the memories, and the incredible people I’ve met. One chapter might be over, but the journey of learning never ends! 🚀 See my key takeaways from courses I took this semester in the comment below. 👇 #ExchangeSemester #AcademicJourney #MiddleEastTechnicalUniversity

The growth curve - 5.25 to 5.75 🚀 (I did pull up my socks for Year 2 and made sure I succeed) Back in school, I was always an above-average student, but I never thought I would be one to take home an award like this. Subjects like Mathematics and Physics always felt like they were flying above my head, no matter how much I tried, they just didn’t seem to click. Fast forward to today, and everything makes sense. Sometimes, certain study areas just don’t spark your interest, but with time, you will realize that the pieces start to fall into place. It’s about finding your rhythm, your sweet spot, and pushing through the challenges that feel the hardest at first. In the last four trimesters, I have watched my academic journey unfold in ways I never expected. Moving to a new country introduced its own set of challenges- adapting to a different way of submitting assignments, and understanding new academic expectations- but little by little, I cracked the code. I won’t lie- it wasn’t easy. There were late-night library sessions, sleepless nights, and moments when I wondered if it would all be worth it. But, with persistence and a lot of hard work, it paid off. I couldn’t be more proud of the progress I made, and I’m beyond grateful for this recognition from Griffith University. It’s a reminder that growth happens when you push through your limits and face the challenges head-on. Thank you to my teachers who supported me along the way- this one’s for all the hard work and dedication that went into getting here. Anita Love, I appreciate you taking the time to help me plan my final trimester and I am happy to report that this trimester was the best Term GPA that I ever got (6.25 on a scale of 7) Griffith International #proud #internationalstudent #womeninbusiness #marketingmajor #postgraduate

Dear Grad School Aspirants, If you're still completing coursework, now is the perfect time to boost your final GPA. A strong GPA can significantly increase your chances of securing Graduate Assistantships or Fellowships at top-ranked US research institutions, quintessentially referred to as R1 universities. I can't stress enough how vital it is to aim for the highest possible GPA during this phase of your academic journey. But why is this so important? A PhD in the United States typically spans five years, with the first two years dedicated to rigorous, graduate-level coursework. At top-ranking institutions, this coursework is incredibly "PhD-Level." Excelling in your coursework demonstrates your ability to thrive in demanding academic environments. Admissions committees and faculty members closely scrutinize your academic performance when considering candidates for assistantships or fellowships. A strong GPA not only signals your intellectual capacity and discipline but also positions you for funding opportunities, research projects, and mentorship from distinguished faculty. In short, finishing with a high GPA strengthens your application and sets you up for success in graduate school. Here are some tips for achieving high grades: ✔️Stay Organized: Keep track of deadlines and assignments. A planner or digital tool can help. ✔️Participate Actively: Engage in discussions and contribute to group work. ✔️Seek Help Early: Don’t hesitate to ask for help if you’re struggling. ✔️Review Regularly: Make a habit of revisiting notes and materials. ✔️Practice Self-Discipline: Avoid procrastination; establish and stick to a study routine. Your hard work now will pay off later! #GradSchoolPrep #R1Institutions #GPA #GradSchoolFunding

Some people have asked me why I chose to get a second master's degree rather than go straight into a doctoral program... well, look no further than my first week back in school. 😄 Don't get me wrong. My classes have been great! But when I started my first master's program 11 years ago, not only was I a different kind of student (with different professional goals and personal motivations), I was a different kind of learner. Whereas I could rely entirely on physical books and planners in 2013, today I acquire multiple formats of the same book. In 2013, I yearned for coursework that spoke directly to contemporary events (then, the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street movements). Today, I approach grad school with the patience and humility of an apprentice -- eager to know what I don't know with the aim of refining my understanding of (rather than plotting my reaction to) present challenges. I now have a greater appreciation for quantitative research methods than I did in those days, too. In short, this master's program is kind of a reset for me. A new start after a decade of self-reflection and realized professional potential made reentering this space less intimidating. As an aside, that last bit entails one piece of advice I'd give to any undergrad student: Get some real-world work experience before going to grad school. It will increase your self-confidence in your grad program by a mile.

The majority of people I know started university through their first year. What if I also told you that many people, including myself started university with a #foundationyear😊 I believe that there are four important things to think about when applying for university entry on a foundation year: 1) Helps improve your academics - Some people start with a foundation year because they did not meet the entry requirements for the main course. This can happen to students who may have only completed two A Level courses rather than the expected three or four. The foundation year can help improve and develop on what you may have missed out on during college or sixth form🙋🏾♀️ 2) Builds confidence for the main course - You will already have a feel of how higher education studies function. Once you start first year, your academic performance may not take a major hit. You also would have had an extra year of learning to equip you for this style of studies. 3) Provides practical skills and knowledge - You will have a broad understanding of the subject area. Have the chance to gain invaluable skills such as academic writing, referencing, and relevant information regarding future modules on the main course📚 4) It is nothing to feel ashamed or embarrassed about - While entering university through a foundation year may not seem like a big deal to some, for others it can be disheartening and embarrassing. You must never feel the need to justify why you are taking a foundation year. You should instead feel proud that you have taken the opportunity to go to university and learn something new💓 #universitylife #studentlife #inspiration #support #lloydsbankinggroup
