🌱📚 Today, the #STOAPanel (Panel for the Future of Science and Technology) of the #EuropeanParliament published an interesting report on #alternativeproteins, encompassing algae, insects, microbial fermentation, and #culturedmeat. The report highlights their potential to revolutionize our protein sources, fostering sustainability and resilience. 🔍 However, it emphasizes that their CURRENT contribution is MINIMAL and data on their usage, particularly in an EU context, are limited and sometimes outdated. 🌍 These non-traditional protein sources are still in their nascent stages, and their future impact hinges on several factors: - Technological advancements - Regulatory frameworks - Market dynamics 📖 These findings mirror the conclusions of my latest book dedicated to #cultivatedmeat ("Carne coltivata. La rivoluzione a tavola? Fandango Libri) ✨ (In addition to the three factors mentioned, I would add #policyframework to shape a #justecologicaltransition). 🧠 It's imperative that we remain discerning amidst the bold promises of #innovators and #supporters, as well as vigilant against #fakenews spread by #opponents. 🌱 Let's stay informed and engaged as we navigate the future of protein production, especially #cultivatedmeat. Knowledge is power! 📚✨ https://lnkd.in/gZ9kH5yc

The latest annual State of Global Policy Report from The Good Food Institute tracks public investment in alternative proteins and examines governmental support and regulations in selected regions. According to the report, Finland has been recognized as one of the top countries advancing cultivated meat and fermentation! The selected countries are building up biotechnology and supporting the future of food with research and infrastructure. What a great achievement! 💚 The report also highlights that Finland has expanded public support for fermentation and plant-based alternative proteins, and it is currently a global leader in business grants for alternative proteins. Other key findings on a global level include: 💰 GFI estimates that newly announced global public funding for alternative proteins amounted to $523 million in 2023, bringing the total investment to $1.67 billion. 🌱 Public entities worldwide increased their investments in developing and supporting the alternative protein sector. However, even more support is necessary to deliver the benefits that alternative proteins promise. 🌍 Emerging leaders in 2023 included the United Kingdom, which announced a new cellular agriculture research hub, funded over 20 research projects, and included cultivated meat in a national biotechnology plan, and Germany, which announced a €38 million program to develop alternative protein production capacity and incentivize alternative protein uptake among consumers and producers.
