Down at the South Coast today, watched the talented Coastguard helicopter and sea rescue team manoeuvre, deploy and winch up during a dramatic rescue when a water enthusiast underestimated the current and had no safety equipment. As wildfire season rages in Utah, aircraft play a crucial role in combating fires from above. At the Tooele Valley Airport in Erda, single-engine air tankers (SEATs) stand ready near the runway. These firefighting airplanes, each capable of carrying up to 800 gallons of fire retardant, are vital in slowing fires and providing ground firefighters with the time they need to respond effectively. Joshua Archibald, the Unit Aviation Manager with the Bureau of Land Management’s West Desert District, emphasized the importance of these aircraft: “These are firefighting airplanes. They can carry up to 800 gallons of fire retardant with them. So what they’re able to do is slow the fire down and give firefighters more time to respond to it.” The deployment of SEATs at Tooele Valley Airport underscores the strategic use of aviation resources in managing wildfire threats. The Casper/Natrona County International Airport is now home to a state-of-the-art BLM Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) base, dedicated to combating wildfires. This new facility marks a significant milestone in enhancing wildfire response capabilities. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to officially mark the completion and opening of this vital base. SEATs are an invaluable asset in wildfire fighting, capable of carrying up to 800 gallons of water or fire retardant. These aircraft are particularly effective in addressing wildfires involving lighter fuels such as sagebrush and grasses. Their ability to take off and reach fires faster than larger aircraft is crucial for an effective initial response. The construction of this base began last year, reflecting the ongoing commitment to supporting ground firefighters and improving wildfire management in the region. Wyoming also boasts a SEAT base in Rock Springs, which has been operational since late June 2021. Gratitude is extended to everyone involved in bringing this project to fruition, including the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the dedicated team at Casper Natrona/International Airport. While some firefighting aircraft, such as heavy tankers and helicopters, may be capable of operating in moderately windy conditions, safety concerns arise when winds reach such high speeds. At 55 mph, winds can severely affect the stability and maneuverability of firefighting aircraft, increasing the risk of accidents and reducing the effectiveness of firefighting efforts. Crosswinds, turbulence, and gusts can make it difficult for pilots to accurately drop retardants or water on target areas, potentially leading to ineffective suppression and wasted resources. https://lnkd.in/e74TN3zX

The European Union is boosting its #rescEU #firefighting aircraft reserve to tackle escalating #wildfires. Following Europe's severe summer wildfire season, the #EU plans to expand its fleet from 13 to 28 #aircraft for 2023, with an eventual goal of establishing a permanent EU firefighting fleet by 2030, featuring the modernized DHC-515 tanker aircraft. Member states will decide on aircraft types, while the EU provides financing and coordination. Do air tankers and helicopters really work to suppress wildfires? There are misconceptions about how wildfire aviation works. Aircraft do not drop pixie dust that magically extinguishes fire; however, they are extremely effective and vitally important when supported.  Fifteen realities for aerial firefighting are as follows: 1. Aircraft are most effective when used for rapid initial attack. 2. Helicopters provide a large multitude of missions on a fire. 3. Aircraft sometimes get lucky and can extinguish a fire, but it’s rare. 4. Aircraft are most often slow fire spread by decreasing fire intensity. 5. Lowering fire intensity allows firefighters to engage the fire directly. 6. The larger the fire, the more limited effectiveness. 7. Aviation capacity in the US and abroad is inappropriate. 8. The primary suppression mission is to support those on the ground who will dig the fire out. 9. The correct tactical employment of aviation is critical. 10. Data clearly shows that a rapid initial attack directly correlates to the size and duration of the fire. 11. Dangers of flight are mitigated by flying within the correct operational envelope. 12. Not engaging the correct agent being dropped for the mission can result in a 7x cost factor loss.   13. A balanced approach to aerial firefighting is critical for success and is missing globally.  14. Underfunded aviation budgets cost taxpayers billions annually.   15. This small airfield in Tenterfield might not look that much at the moment, but it’s actually the site of an incredibly impressive community-led bushfire response that took place in October 2023. This week, Adriana Keating and I have been in Tenterfield as part of a Fire to Flourish project, to look at what lessons can be learnt about that community’s bushfire preparedness, response and recovery in the aftermath of the bushfires they experienced in October 2023. We’ve talked to some really impressive people and organisations about their work with community members; about their experiences of the bushfires; and about their visions for the future of their beautiful town. Which brings me back to the Tenterfield Aerodrome. Entirely run by a group of volunteers – the Friends of Tenterfield Aerodrome – this group ensured that the airfield was able to support NSW RFS aerial responses for around 2 weeks during the October bushfires. They had a 210,000 litre water tank to supply the water needed up to six helicopters and two Single Engine Air Tankers; some willing volunteers to keep up the water supplies; and also to maintain the surface of the grass runway. The CWA were also enlisted to keep meals up to the pilots. We spoke to several people who said that having this resource right next to town saved many houses – if not the town itself. And it was a real source of pride to them that local Tenterfield residents were able to make such an important contribution to fighting the fires.
