Back when I served as a production supervisor, a key responsibility of mine was drafting operator line-ups for the second and third shifts, as well as weekends. My primary objective was to create a standardized format rich in detail, aiming to preempt those dreaded 3 a.m. pager calls for mundane inquiries. Equally important was empowering operators with the necessary information to navigate potential challenges during off-shifts, all while maintaining my own sanity. Rather than reacting harshly to routine errors made by off-shift operators, I adopted a proactive approach. Upon encountering such situations, I conducted thorough reviews of the issue and decision-making process. Subsequently, I worked collaboratively with the team to highlight opportunities for improvement, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development. Fast forward to today, technological advancements have revolutionized our ability to deliver work instructions electronically. Operators now have instant access to clear instructions upon logging into the system, including details on production targets, destination, end customers, and a summary of any alerts or issues from the preceding shift. Reflecting on the progress made, it's gratifying to see how far we've come. Thankfully, pagers, once an integral part of our communication system, are now relegated to the annals of history, symbolizing the evolution and improvement of our operational practices.

Consultant - "John from the TBSP is one of the worlds leading authorities on how to implement simple Quality and Continuous Improvement systems that will guarantee to make your business more efficient, fun and money"
During a Gemba walk in an organisation, I encountered a situation where a job was in progress, but the necessary documentation was incomplete. Curious, I approached the technician responsible and inquired why the paperwork hadn't been completed. To my surprise, the technician mentioned that the Team Leader had instructed him not to bother. Seeking clarity, I approached the Team Leader and questioned the decision. With a hint of unease in his voice, the Team Leader explained, "You don't understand, John. The site Director instructed us to prioritise these jobs for shipping today." Recognising the urgency, I conveyed that I would discuss the matter directly with the site Director since shipping these parts without proper documentation was not an option. Upon reaching the site Director's office, I recounted the situation and our conversation. Without hesitation, the site Director acknowledged the priority he had emphasised but admitted to assuming that it would be executed correctly. Returning to the concerned area with the site Director, he gathered the team and clarified the situation. The job was indeed a priority, needing to be shipped that day, but he emphasised the importance of doing it correctly, including completing all necessary documentation. Privately, he apologised to the Team Leader for any confusion, stressing that every job must be executed accurately, regardless of urgency. This incident highlights a common challenge where individuals may feel uncomfortable challenging authority figures, assuming they are always right due to their titles. However, it underscores the fact that people in positions of authority are human and fallible. It emphasises the importance of speaking up when something feels amiss, ensuring awareness and consideration by those in authority. #quality #business #change
