Falcon Road rail bridge is set to get a colourful makeover in 2025 thanks to the winners of an architectural design competition run by Wandsworth Borough Council and London Festival of Architecture. The winning proposal, Beyond the Bridge, prioritises community engagement, sustainability, and safety, with a design that reflects the rich cultural identity of #Wandsworth. The new bridge will open during Wandsworth’s year as London Borough of Culture 2025. Every year, the Doolan Award process sees our expert judges visit the shortlisted buildings, to carefully assess each project's architectural integrity, usability and context, delivery and execution, and sustainability. Our 2024 Doolan Award judging panel included David Kohn of David Kohn Architects, author and journalist Gabriella Bennett and RIAS President Karen Anderson. Here they share their reflections and insights on this year's winning building - John McAslan + Partners' refurbishment of the Burrell Collection: "The Burrell Collection is an outstanding example of problem-solving and future-proofing. [It has] created a better spatial experience...and significantly increased the area available to the public." London to become the 'Manhattan-on-Thames' London is on the brink of a skyline transformation, resembling a 'Manhattan-on-Thames', according to a recent report by New London Architecture. The report unveils plans for an impressive 583 towers across the city. Among these, nearly 600 towers, each soaring over 20 stories tall, are eagerly awaiting their turn in the development pipeline over the next decade. 🌆 This surge in vertical construction significantly surpasses the 270 skyscrapers erected in the previous decade alone. Peter Murray co-founder of New London Architecture, emphasized the profound impact tall buildings have had on the city's landscape over the past two decades and underscored their continued necessity. Caution!! RANT BELOW I know modern architecture isn't for everyone and in particular brutalist architecture, but, if we continue to just approach our existing building stock with a "clear fell" approach, we are going to always find it difficult to achieve the needed steps to a low carbon future. Recent news from Wolverhampton that this iconic landmark will be flattened to make way for "progress" really does grate... Real progress would be employing high quality and highly trained professionals with vision and insight that can transform this building for it's future uses and need. Preserving our architectural heritage, paving a way for a lower impact on our environment and delivering local jobs and skills adopting circular economy thinking. Please can we start seeing some progress on this kind of thinking in our society.

This week Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) - Australia Chapter presented shortlisted designs for 110 George St Parramatta Design Excellence. Back in mid 2023 building reuse wasn't as widely discussed and tested as today, although it's only over a year ago. The space of #AdaptiveReuse changes and grows in Sydney and Melbourne markets. However, we still see knockdowns and rebuilds on a daily basis. The teams considered a retention of the complex hexagon structure of the existing brutalist architecture, despite the brief not asking for it. However, it's been perceived as too difficult, conflicting with the design intent, while limited time of the competition didn't allow to explore the potential further. A few questions, or suggestions: - Should design briefs be developed further and explore these opportunities, before it goes out for a 6 weeks design sprint? Clients are responsible for the final outcome - they set the standard and aspirations. We can't blame architects for not achieving carbon reduction targets, while the industry isn't doing the minimum - extending the life of the existing stock. - Who is involved in brief development? Do clients have a broad list of consultants to shape the initial vision? It'd be great to see sustainability not as an add on or a VM exercise, but an imbedded strategy. South Station Redevelopment project in Boston named as one of 11 architecture projects that will shape the world in 2025. Upon completion, the project will reimagine the transportation hub's concourse and increase bus and rail capacity.
