The conclusion of this study: “Our preliminary data show that the S100ABC effectively reduces the circulating bacterial load. The S100ABC could be an adjunct sorbent for reducing 𝑆. 𝑎𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑢𝑠 in human blood, supporting antibiotic therapy in patients with 𝑆. 𝑎𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑢𝑠-induced septic shock.” Article featured in Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation Journal. https://lnkd.in/ev8pTjft

Perhaps the Seraph 100 treatment can be used post-surgically to reduce the risk of neutrophil-mediated (NET) immunothrombosis and the incidence of infective endocarditis. "There are few diseases that highlight the crucial interplay between coagulation, bacteria, and immunity better than IE.131 IE is a condition defined by an infected blood clot or vegetation attached to the cardiac valves. The presence of bacteria, neutrophils, platelets, fibrinogen, and VWF in mice with an infected vegetation demonstrate the characteristic immunothrombotic properties of this disease (Figure 5). Immunohistochemical staining of 39 human IE valve samples revealed that extracellular DNA structures were commonly colocalized with MPO, suggesting the presence of NETs inside these vegetations.5 Here elastase, extracellular MPO and cell-free DNA were more abundantly expressed than in normal valvular tissue, implying a major role of neutrophils and NETs in patients with IE.5 However, the exact involvement of NETs in the pathophysiology of IE remains to be further elucidated. In Figure 6, we highlight the potential relevant players that could contribute to IE". reviewed by Martinod et. al 2022 Staphylococcus aureus and Neutrophil Extracellular Traps: The Master Manipulator Meets Its Match in Immunothrombosis https://lnkd.in/e3NRHRFk

The effectiveness and safety of sucroferric oxyhydroxide in the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in dialysis patients: a systematic review Sucroferric oxyhydroxide is comparable with sevelamer and lanthanum in decreasing serum phosphorus levels. It is also associated with higher hemoglobin, ferritin, and transferrin saturation levels compared with the sevelamer group. There are no significant differences in the risks of adverse events, serious adverse events, and all-cause mortality Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation, Volume 39, Issue Supplement_1, May 2024, gfae069-0852-1579, DOI: https://lnkd.in/dFxweW67 Published: 23 May 2024

Title: Randomized Study Over a 24-Week Period in 128 Patients Undergoing Renal Transplantation Demonstrating Significant Increases in Hemoglobin and Iron Metabolism Parameters Background and Objectives: Roxadustat is an oral hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PH) inhibitor, which leads to the stimulation of endogenous erythropoiesis. Roxadustat increases hemoglobin in adult renal transplant patients with anemia, with an adverse event profile comparable to that of the control group. https://lnkd.in/dsmcXkVk

Blocking bile acid reabsorption in the kidney may alleviate cholestatic-associated cholemic nephropathy Cholemic nephropathy (CN) represents a severe complication of cholestasis and remains an unmet clinical challenge. This study, published in the Journal of Hepatology, utilized an experimental mouse model of obstructive cholestasis (BDL mice) to demonstrate that proximal tubular epithelial cells (TECs) absorb and accumulate bile acids (BAs) through the apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter (ASBT), resulting in kidney damage. Significantly, the inhibition of renal ASBT by AS0369 prevented kidney injury, arising as a novel therapeutic strategy for CN. #OpenAccess here: https://lnkd.in/dDR32gat Ahmed Ghallab EASL | The Home of Hepatology

A 52-year-old woman was referred to the hepatology clinic because of jaundice, pruritus, hepatomegaly, xanthelasma and the following abnormal liver test results: Plasma Bilirubin 93 µmol/L (< 20) Alanine aminotransferase 111 U/L (< 42) Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) 826 U/L (< 250) Albumin 34 g/L (35–45) g-Glutamyl transferase (GGT) 764 U/L (< 55) She had a positive test result for anti-mitochondrial antibodies. DISCUSSION Subsequent studies, including liver biopsy, showed the patient to have primary biliary cirrhosis. Note the predominant cholestatic biochemical picture with raised plasma ALP and GGT activities. This condition is associated with hyperlipidaemia, hence the xanthelasma, and is more common in middleaged women with other autoimmune disorders. There may also be raised plasma IgM concentration and osteoporosis and osteomalacia. #MLT_SUDAN
