Big Picture Science Radio Show: Not Just a Phage We’re hurtling towards a post-antibiotic world, as the overuse of antibiotics has given rise to dangerous drug-resistant bacteria. Can we fight back using viruses as weapons? An obscure medical therapy uses certain viruses called bacteriophages to treat infection. For a century attempts to turn phage-therapy into a life-saving treatment have faltered, but today there’s renewed interest in this approach. Can we use phages to forestall the antibiotic crisis? Neutropenia is an abnormally low concentration of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) in the blood. Neutrophils make up the majority of circulating white blood cells and serve as the primary defense against infections by destroying bacteria, bacterial fragments and immunoglobulin-bound viruses in the blood. People with neutropenia are more susceptible to bacterial infections and, without prompt medical attention, the condition may become life-threatening (neutropenic sepsis). Journal of Internal Medicine and Emergency Research (ISSN-2582-7367) is accepting submissions for the upcoming issue. How lipivir® Works When the HSV1 herpes virus is dormant it sits in the ganglion nerve tissue. It sends out scout virus particles to investigate the condition of the lip cells. If the conditions are favourable, the scout virus particles send back signals to the herpes virus in the nerve tissue. lipivir® interrupts this viral signalling, meaning that the virus particles around the lip cells, or the affected area that the product is applied to, cannot inform the herpes virus in the ganglion nerve tissue. This helps prevent an invasion of new virus particles, and therefore a cold sore outbreak is impeded. Put simply, lipivir® builds a barrier – an internal barrier against the viral signalling that causes cold sores. #coldsores #prevention #preventioniskey #lips #lipstick #cosmetics #lipsdontlie #lipcream #lipcare #lipcarekit #lipcarebalm #beautytips #beautybloggers

Very excited to share with you our recent review exploring the role of the extracellular vesicles in the pathogenesis of Campylobacter jejuni. These small particles allow the quick, safe and specific delivery of diverse virulence factors in the environment of target cells and so seem to play a major role in the establishment of infection by C. jejuni ! Blood culture-free ultra-rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) The researchers describe an ultra-rapid AST method that bypasses the need for traditional blood culture. The technology reduces the turnaround time of reporting drug susceptibility profiles by more than 40–60 h. The authors evaluated the technology by the enrolment of 190 hospitalized patients suspected of having infection, achieving 100% match in species identification. #sciencenewshighlights #ScienceMission https://lnkd.in/gMS_qgj9 https://lnkd.in/g8MmM37t
