It was May 2004. My father was playing (loose term) a round at Finham Golf Club in Coventry. He felt unwell, to the great concern of those around him. In next to no time, help arrived. Dramatically (these things can't be done otherwise) and expertly, the air ambulance landed on the course, and he was airlifted to hospital with a suspected cardiac event. 𝗗𝗮𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟰 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀. I can't know for certain what would have happened without Your Local Air Ambulance WNDLR that day. But I do know that it couldn't have been any better. Hence I owe and give my 💯 support to #AirAmbulanceWeek 🚁, which runs until 15 September - and to #EmergencyServicesDay 🚑🚓🚒 today. This year's #AirAmbulanceWeek message is as powerful as it is simple: "𝙏𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮'𝙨 𝙎𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙚𝙧, 𝙏𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙬'𝙨 𝙇𝙞𝙛𝙚𝙨𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙧." No explanation required. Maybe what does need explaining - or, at least, calling out, however - are some of the compelling facts and figures: 🚁there are 21 air ambulance charities, co-ordinated by Air Ambulances UK 🚁collectively, they deliver > 45,000 missions each year (126 per day) 🚁they deploy the UK's 37 helicopters (to give you a comparator, London Ambulance Service NHS Trust, the largest of the 10 ambulance trusts in the country, has c450 emergency ambulances) 🚁air ambulances are, effectively, 185mph acute hospitals with the capacity and capability to carry out ultra-complex procedures such as open heart surgery 🚁they are often the only viable solution for the busiest (like major cities) or least accessible (like the 5th hole) places 🚁clinical staff are typically seconded in from neighbouring NHS organisations 🚁the charities (except in Scotland) receive no direct day-to-day government funding and depend almost entirely on charitable donations 🚁the average cost of a mission is £4,110. We're all struggling at the moment. We all have competing priorities. There are so many worthy causes that vie for our attention. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁. The map below shows the 21 charities. I ask you to do whatever you can, howsoever small, to support your local service. Meet the cop who saved hundreds of lives with his blood. 1) Satya Prakash Bishnoi ji was born in a Rajasthani family and it was 1994 when his teacher Mr. Sanjay Malhotra were desperately searching for a blood donor for a pregnant lady. 2) It was the time when Satya Prakash ji volunteered to donate blood and got to know his blood group (O- which is a universal blood donor group). 3) After few months his teacher reached out to him and there were the lady to whom his blood was donated. 4) The couple were blessed by a daughter and her life was saved by the blood Mr. Satya Prakash gave unintentionally. 5) The couples were in tears while thanking him and this changed everything. 6) Mr. Prakash got the kick and started donating blood. Every 3 months he used to wait to donate blood. 7) Every blood donation came up with a new story. 8) He joined Rajasthan Police, and while serving the nation. He donated blood in many cases. 9) On one side you will see a strong cop but on the other side you will find him as an extremely humble human filled with empathy. 10) He encouraged his wife so much that his wife (also a cop) started donating blood. 11) It didn’t stop here, they encourage all their colleagues and organises blood donation camps every year for the cause. 12) This man is a living example of service and sacrifice. We often criticise Police departments but mostly forgets to appreciate their service. I betrayed my stakeholders! Guilty as charged, Yes I skipped work today (for few minutes 🥲)while I was expected to work on some important collaterals! In the daily hustle & bustle of corporate life, we tend to subside our duty of giving back. I’m not saying we lack the intent but somehow it does not make it to the top of our priority list. Every year corporations in India come up with various CSR initiatives like tree plantation or cleanup drives, but they see a bare minimum participation. (I observed this in this particular camp too, an office space with thousands of young employees got just over 100 donors) However, something like corporate blood donation camps is the easiest way of giving back to the society. Why? It takes barely 15 odd minutes, and guess what it comes at zero cost and zero efforts. Moreover the feeling of giving back is unmatched, specially when you get to know that according to National AIDS Control Organisation, India, falls short of over 1 million units annually and whatever donations we receive only 60% is voluntary rest is just replacement blood. Personally taking part in this initiative (by my Co working space provider) was nothing less than an escape to an already exhausting week. Do your bit take part in the CSR initiatives and at least donate blood while you can because you don’t stay young and healthy forever to be able to do the same.

Today is World Blood Donor Day! At Health Tick we have a special interest in health and wellbeing and, like many others around the country, we’re taking this opportunity to celebrate all those who give blood and plasma to save thousands of Kiwi lives every year. To mark this day, we decided to promote blood donation amongst our team, and Simon Diprose our Business Development Manager signed up and gave his first-ever donation. Here's what he had to say: “From start to finish it was easier than I thought. A questionnaire, a private interview to check details, 6-8 minutes for the extraction, 5 minutes to heal, and 10 minutes for a cup of tea and a biscuit. I don’t know why I haven’t done this before and I’d love to encourage others to sign up.” So, it’s not scary. It’s a good thing to do. And it helps Kiwis in need! A few quick facts: 👉 30,000 patients in New Zealand rely on blood and blood products each year 👉 New Zealand needs 5,000 donations each week 👉 Less than 4% of the eligible population in New Zealand are donors! As the blessed month of Ramadan is concluding, I request all of you celebrating Eid pick any social cause you are passionate about and give back to the community. Some social causes to pick from: 1. Finance a deserving person with skill development by supporting them acquire a skill. 2. Help a talented person with his/her job search, review their cv, provide mock interview coaching, share potential leads where they can have an informational feedback session with a potential employer. Masha Allah for the last decade, I am really fortunate to give back to the community by donating blood to thalassemia patients on a regular basis. Following the tradition of my compassionate father he donated blood regularly. Here is some guidance on donating blood: 1. Be in good health condition 2. Ideally you can donate blood after an hour of having a meal 3. Before you donate blood ensure to get your blood pressure checked 4. Before you donate blood get your hemoglobin checked 5. After you have donated blood rest for 10-15 minutes usually blood banks serve you with a juice. Each blood donation saves 3 lives and brings a smile on thalassemia patients.
