Get Ready for Eye Donation Month: Earlier in July, Danny Rivers - one of the "faces" of upcoming 2024 Eye Donation Month in November, was set to compete in the Transplant Games in Birmingham Alabama. Danny is a bilateral cornea recipient and also donated a kidney to his father-in-law. Unfortunately, Danny suffered a knee injury during his training and was unable to compete. But, he still attended the Games as a supporter of his fellow donation recipients and living donors. Danny was interviewed about his experience at the Games and what it means to be a cornea recipient and living donor. Watch his interview, and be on the lookout for his Eye Donation Month video coming later this summer! Thanks to Advancing Sight Network for introducing us to Danny, and putting this interview on our radar! https://lnkd.in/erCtW9nM

This speaks volumes about how important investors are to helping organizations focus on their mission and how board leaders make an impact. The return on investment is high and allows the organization to strategically plan for a sustainable future. Congratulations to #Spelman College. As a nonprofit organization, we are always open to sharing how investing in CASA of HoCo can Change A Child's Story in foster care. #investinginpeople #TeamCASA #wegotnext
We are humbled, honored, and excited to be the recipient of a historic $100 million donation from philanthropist, businesswoman and longtime Spelman trustee Ronda Stryker and her husband William Johnston. Their gift is not only the largest in our history, it is the largest individual donation ever given to an HBCU, and larger than most gifts to higher educational institutions in America. We are delighted to share this news now, as 2024 marks 100 years since Spelman Baptist Seminary became Spelman College, a pivotal and meaningful time in our school’s history. $75 million of the $100 million will go to endowed student scholarships, helping Spelman College continue to attract the best and brightest students while reducing any financial barriers that prevent qualified students from enrolling or remaining enrolled. The remaining $25 million will be used to develop an academic focus on public policy and democracy, improve student housing, and provide flexible funding to meet critical strategic needs. Day 46 of 100 Days of Games of Chance in Kenya. The CSR from Games of Chance gave rise to the Non Governmental Organisation Movement in Kenya. Today’s article is from July 25th 1967. It talks about how the general public has ‘hardened’ to charity/contributions because of being bombarded by requests for cash contributions in the streets, restaurants, bus stops, offices and public spaces of major towns in the country. The article celebrates the structure of the Kenya Charity Sweepstakes and how the Kenya Government had formed the Kenya National Council for Social Services, which required all charitable bodies to register to it and which ensured there was no duplication of charities. Kenya Charity Sweepstakes in offering lotteries for purposes of funding charities - in my opinion - created an entire industry that we now know as Non Governmental Organisations who are primarily charity/not for profit and are governed by Non Governmental Organisations ( NGO) Board of Kenya. https://lnkd.in/dvqd5e5m

Asking individuals, corporations, foundations, or any other entity for donations is an interesting proposition. In many ways, we compete with other nonprofits in our community for contributions, but when all is said and done, we are working for the same goal: relieve the suffering and burden of loved ones who need it and help get folks back on a path to living a happy, productive life. At VOA Utah, our focus is: + Provide emergency shelter for women and youth ages 15-22. + Move unhoused individuals out of shelters and into sustainable housing. + Provide detoxification services to our most vulnerable populations and set them up with continued rehabilitation services. + Provide mental health counseling for anybody who needs it. + Scour our public spaces, create relationships with Uthans living on the streets, and connect them with services — ours or anybody else's — so they can get the help they need. + Provide comprehensive wrap-around services for thousands of Utahns that in many cases, are immediate band-aids but that always center on sustained recovery. If you connect with our mission, we welcome your contribution and the support it gives us to provide these services, day in and day out, 24 hours a day. Additionally, a private donor has committed to match all donations up to $75,000, so there is no better time than now to contribute. Whether you donate to us or any of the critically needed nonprofits in our community, please consider an end-of-year contribution. https://lnkd.in/gUK7Hgpp

Day 20 of 100 Days of Games of Chance in Kenya. #nationalisation Today’s article is from May 5th 1972.It captures a section of Parliamentary debate on the ownership and management of Kenya Charity Sweepstakes which was run by the Jockey Club of Kenya. This story underlines a moment in transition from colonisation to Africanisation of Games of Chance in Kenya. Do you think our politicians were up to the task of shepherding this new industry? https://lnkd.in/deVZHD3f

I am going to be brief. I wish that I could tell you that the Concepts and Goals of the Midnight Basketball League Program are no longer needed. The young adults are no longer dropping out of school, and that each graduate is fully capable of going on to a higher level of education, or entering the high-tech job market. I wish I could say that the Drug Cultural has gone away, or the Homicides have stopped, and everybody has a job. Unfortunately, if I told you any of these things, it would be wishful thinking on my part. So, the Concepts and Goals of the Midnight Basketball League Program are still VALET. The National Organization, the Association of Midnight Basketball, Inc., is growing at a fantastic rate. As of today, we are in 23 cities. It is the responsibility of the Association of Midnight Basketball, Inc. to build a structure that can accommodate this growth. It is the task of the Association to set into place a Uniform National Network : (1) Civic Groups, (2) Churches, (3) School Boards and Districts, (4) Law Enforcement, (5) Recreation Departments, (6) Chambers of Commerce, (7) Public Housing(HUD), (8) Mayor and City Government, (9) Local Businesses, we need them all. Senior Vice President of Transplant Services at Advancing Sight Network
1moThe "Magic City" was truly magical thanks to all of the athletes, donor families and volunteers who came to compete, connect and serve. Thanks also to the Transplant Games of America staff who pulled it all together!
