This morning during the General Session at #EBAA2024 we announced the theme for 2024 Eye Donation Month. Eye Donation Month is observed each November. Aligning with the lyrics to the iconic 1972 Johnny Nash song, “I Can See Clearly Now”, the theme emphasizes the LITERAL outcome of eye donation – the ability to see, and the FIGURATIVE outcome of what people experience or “see now” as a donor family, recipient, or champion of eye donation. Combining these elements; actual vision, the metaphorical ability to see a new perspective of life and the world, and a distinct memorable song as a backdrop – we celebrate Eye Donation Month and spread the word about the transformative power of corneal donation and transplantation. Numbers that scare me: 4. Only about 4% of those eligible to donate blood in Canada do so. A bit of context around why this number is startlingly low: - It takes up to 5 donations to support a patient undergoing heart surgery - It can take up to 50 donations to save someone seriously injured in a car accident - Someone going through treatment for luekeimia requires up to 8 donations… per week. You get the idea - we can do better than 4%. I closed out a trip home with a trip to Canadian Blood Services for lifetime donation #180. There is a certain magic to donating blood, literally offering up a part of yourself not knowing who might benefit from it. There is something tangible and beautiful about the process. It’s been encouraging to see updates to donor eligibility criteria updated over the past several months to expand the range of eligible donors - if you weren’t previously eligible it might be worth checking in to see if you are now. If you are looking to close out 2023 on a hopeful note, I’d encourage to hop in to donate or make plans to do so in 2024.

March is #NationalEyeDonorAwarenessMonth! For this week's #FYIFriday, we are sharing five facts about eye donation! 1️⃣ Vision Restoration: Eye donation can restore vision for individuals with corneal blindness, allowing them to see the world again. 2️⃣ Universal Acceptance: Eye donation is accepted by people of all ages and backgrounds. 3️⃣ Longevity of Donation: Corneas can be preserved up to 14 days after donation, allowing ample time to arrange transplantation procedures. 4️⃣ Minimal Disruption: Eye donation is a non-invasive procedure that does not alter the donor's appearance. It can be done without interfering with funeral arrangements or traditional burial practices. 5️⃣ Multiple Lives Touched: One eye donation can restore sight for two people since each cornea can be transplanted individually.
