Ready for a celestial event? On April 8, 2024, a breath-taking total eclipse will grace the skies, stretching from Southern Ontario to Newfoundland and Labrador! Here in Oakville, we'll witness a partial eclipse starting around 2 pm, hitting its peak at roughly 3:19 pm, and wrapping up by 4:30 pm. While eclipses are undeniably fascinating, they come with potential risks, especially for our eyes. When the Moon steps in front of the Sun, even partially, staring directly can lead to serious eye damage, including solar retinopathy. Ouch. Here are some critical safety tips from the Canadian Association of Optometrists: Use certified solar eclipse viewers (ISO 12312-2 standard). Ensure your glasses are undamaged before use. Don't improvise with homemade viewing devices. Avoid using cameras, binoculars, or telescopes without proper solar filters. Seek immediate care from an optometrist if you experience vision changes or discomfort after the eclipse. So, enjoy the mesmerizing sight of the solar eclipse, but remember to stay safe.
