Hey LinkedIn 👋. I was asked the following question during an interview for a backend developer role for a Fintech product: *How do you ensure data integrity and consistency, particularly in systems handling millions of financial transactions per day?* I provided the following answer: In a Fintech product, there's absolutely no room for mistakes, of which  the most likely aspect to cause mistakes is the handling of transactions. This is because various data have to change and in most cases, it has to occur across multiple segments of a database or even across databases. As a senior developer who has built backend architectures that scales effortlessly, my solution in a simplified way include: 1. Using async/await across all API endpoint methods: This is very important, as it helps to track the state of transactions as well as proper error handling. 2. Wrapping all multiple data manipulation requests within a special database method called "transactions": This method does something simple, it groups all database writes as well as reads together, and it will only fulfill when all reads and writes are successful. This is the core of data consistency in any transactional request, it will ensure the integrity of multiple reads and writes. 3. Grouping of complex requests in sections and tracking them: This involves identifying similar data manipulation destinations and grouping them together, then tracking them and preparing them for possible automated retries. A typical example here is: In a bank transfer from Fintech product A (say BANK A) to BANK B within the Nigerian banking sector, the transaction will need to call an endpoint that will change both sender and receiver's available balance and other data across both BANK A, BANK B and even CBN database. Grouping these requests according to these data manipulation destinations will allow the system to track the state of the transaction and prepare for possible automated retries as may be required. 4. Choosing the right technologies: As an experienced Google Cloud developer, I will choose Cloud Functions/Cloud Run (This will allow us to serve millions of API requests effortlessly) as well as Cloud Spanner as primary database (it will allow us  to handle millions of consistent database reads and writes effortlessly as well). They will combine to prepare a product for unlimited scaling needs and data integrity. In conclusion, product needs will always vary. Therefore, thorough research will continuously be conducted in order to build and maintain a scalable backend architecture.
