Time to drop a name and drink tea :-) First, a quick thank you to everyone that responded to my last post. It's greatly appreciated and I'm doing my best to keep up with your comments. If you see that I've reacted to your comment it's because I've actually taken the time to read it. I hope that most of you don't mind getting a passive aggressive thumbs up. Anyhow... Second of all, I was mistaken in thinking that I was contacted by a recruiter. There are very few interviews that go well but still result in you saying, "no." I spoke with a couple individuals today about a program that would provide access to a client network and mock interviews... In exchange for 7 to 12% of my paycheck for up to 4 years as repayment. After doing a little bit of digging, I found that the company is TheTecTutor. The source of my confusion was the fact that I was being offered placement into a position without the training; I would have been charged for the recruiting process. I can build my own network... For free. I can set up mock interviews for myself... For free. I can place myself into a position... For flipping free. I told them I was disinterested in being charged for what I can do on my own for free and thanked them for their time. With all due respect, I am a professional providing professional services. You pay me for that. I don't pay you to have a job.
I had a conversation with a recruiter today that included the words, "it costs 7 to 12% of your paycheck for 4 years after placement but only if you're placed." Thoughts? It seems sketchy to me...

💡"Not All Recruiters Are Created Equal"- Kicking this Monday off at StevenDouglas with a little "recruiting" comic relief ! In all seriousness, does the recruiter you are working with "truly" understand your skill set ? Does this video sound familiar ? As a passive job seeker, have you taken the time to research who you are entrusting your career search to ? As with any new Company you might be considering joining, you should be performing the same due diligence on the recruiter you are partnering with. Have they provided the following : ✔️References ✔️Examples of proven success in your vertical or area of expertise ✔️SME : Are they a subject matter expert in your market ? ✔️How they will be protecting the confidentiality of your search ✔️Thorough explanation of their process Follow StevenDouglas Follow Laurie Canepa Credit to Dry Bar Comedy

"What did we learn?" I ask this a lot. Of my kids. Myself after I do something dumb like cut myself with a chainsaw. Clients and prospects. Like this: Them: "We're struggling with figuring out how to acquire customers need so we did this market research." Me: "This is…a LOT of slides. What did we learn from this?" Them: "Well…we thought X and we were pretty much right." Me: "Was that worth the $75,000? That could have been a new hire." Them: "Well…" But when I help a small team interview 10 customers: Me: "What did we learn from this?" Them: Keep talking out of the room, down the hall, out the door, to the car, to the cashier, to their partner at dinner table, to the mail person the next day…

Building products that create impact and delight • Seeking product design leadership or IC roles in NYC or SF
I'd like to understand why a recruiter - who could help with feedback on a resume, connections, or sharing hiring trends at a company - is telling someone 'you should change your personal appearance and dye your hair if you want to find work'. It's also similar to saying 'don't share dates on your resume'. And I am over it and having to lie and pretend I'm something that I'm not. Why is inauthenticity and faking who you are more desirable than wrinkles or grey hair? I had some great early career experiences that helped me become a better designer and consultant, including proudly working in government, working on an early version of the Tesla Web site, and managing a vendor as we delivered both a booth and Web site for a client at Mobile World Congress, the largest mobile conference in the world. These were moments that mattered to me, but because they're 'old' they are seen as 'evidence of being old'. I have to hide them on a resume but don't understand why I can't share what I'm proud of, or hide ANY part of my identity. I'm neurodivergent, an immigrant, queer and have a career history - a long one now. I've come to accept who I am after a long journey of not accepting and hiding. I'm not ashamed of any parts of me, and if you're a company that doesn't want to hire people because we're seen as 'old', and if your recruiter is part of that system of ageism, then it's time to unpack your biases. When do the systems of oppression change? Where are companies that don't ask about our grey hairs? Where is that level of respect?
A recruiter just suggested I dye my grey, who am I kidding, white beard, black. Apparently, this will make me more hireable.
