The recent completion of the Rockfall Mitigation Project along US 340 in West Virginia marks a significant milestone in enhancing safety and connectivity in the region. Led by Access Limited, a prominent rockfall mitigation firm, and Triton Construction Inc., the project was finished nearly two weeks ahead of schedule despite expanded scope requirements. Activities encompassed stabilizing the corridor through rock slope scaling, hazard removal, and rock bolting, along with repairing damaged pavement and guardrails. Additional measures like draped and pinned mesh, ground-level rockfall barriers, and on-slope attenuator systems were installed to minimize future rockfall risks. With the area's historical importance and high traffic volume, the project aimed to ensure safe passage for the estimated 24,500 daily vehicles, including commuters and tourists. Access Limited Construction, now a part of GeoStabilization International®, showcased its expertise and commitment to safety, completing the project efficiently while contributing to reduced carbon emissions from diverted traffic. #rockfallmitigation #geology #geotechnical #geotechnicalengineering

Impact through delivering solutions that are safe, sustainable and efficient. Together we create a safe and liveable world #Fugro
Managing nearshore sites presents a unique set of operational challenges, from access to data collection. The dynamic interplay of land and sea creates a complex environment, where wind and waves demand not just experience, but innovative solutions. These solutions are crucial to ensure the safety of our people and the high quality of the data we gather. I take great pride in our leadership in nearshore site characterization for coastal developments. With 25 years of experience in both marine and land site characterization, I can confidently say that our team's expertise in developing and delivering solutions is unparalleled. One example of our team's exceptional capability is our project for the State of Guernsey, where we aimed to transform St Peter Port into Guernsey's first all-tide access marina. Our approach was multifaceted: we pioneered the use of sonic drilling in this challenging environment, actively engaged with the local community, and adeptly managed marine traffic and obstacles. This project not only mitigated risks but also provided invaluable ground insights. Discover more about how our innovative strategies and committed team played a pivotal role in this groundbreaking project. #Fugro #UnlockingInsights #PortsDevelopment #CoastalInfrastructure

Happy World Water Day! Minnesota is the Land of 10,000 Lakes (actually 11,842 larger than 10 acres, but who’s counting?), with more shoreline than Hawaii, California, and Florida combined, and as our environmental professionals know, abundant wetlands to avoid, minimize, and mitigate for in our mine planning. #WorldWaterDay highlights the need for clean water around the world and today we encourage all Minnesotans to take a moment to celebrate how lucky we are to have this fresh water in our state and recognize our responsibilities for protecting that invaluable resource. At MiningMinnesota, we are proud of the work done by our Members to ensure that our surface and ground water resources are understood and cared for and that our projects do no harm. It can be a challenge in a water-rich state, but not an insurmountable one. With proper planning, engineering, and ultimately, execution, our State can provide critical materials for our nation while also ensuring that our legacy includes clean and safe water resources for future generations. #cleanwater #responsiblemining #minnesotamining #wecandothis

Senior investigative journalist • I cover Antarctic geopolitics and African conservation • 1st South African 👱♀️ journalist to oversummer in Antarctica • Based in Cape Town, Africa's polar gateway
No words. 🤦♀️ Antarctic/sub-Antarctic legacy waste keeps dishing out nasty surprises. "The work is complicated by the fact all the old buildings are riddled with asbestos. When pulling out old materials, workers have to be kitted out in two full-coverage protective suits with a respirator. When they finish the shift, they have to move through a decontamination unit, where fibres are vacuumed off, they shower and their protective clothing is discarded into a bin at the other end. All contaminated building materials are double-bagged and stored in line with Australian standards before being shipped back to Australia for disposal in deep burial sites. It’s not a small problem. When the accommodation block known as Hass House was renovated last year, about 17 tonnes of asbestos-contaminated material was removed. All our tradespeople are trained up in asbestos removal," Building Trades Supervisor Cameron Lea said. "Carpenters complete high-level training so they can deal with all types of asbestos." https://lnkd.in/dtv6HXpN

Overview of Kayford mountain MTR site • One of my first focused environmental flights in which I was going after a specific issue rather than just looking for beautiful horrible photographs to make. around Kayford Mountain, West Virginia In this overview, all stages of this process of M Removal Mining can be seen from the clearing of virgin forest at the top to removal of earth in the middle and lower right to expose the black coal seams. The Cumberland Plateau, where this type of mining predominates, is the origin of the water supply for 50 million people in the USA. To date over 1200 miles of streams have been buried by this process. • So many thanks to SouthWings for flight support on this and so many others. Without Southwings, we would not know how horrible these things really are! • #Anthropocene #Climatechange #Climatecrisis #CO2 #Coal #Deforestation #Environment #Habitatloss #landscape #landscapes #natgeo #Water #Waterpollution • 2302-095 -----------

Can’t believe I ran into Ryan Miller from Land Science at the Battelle Conference this week. Ryan and I first spoke back in 2016, and I helped him find his position at Land Sciences. Now 8 years later he is a Director leading their U.S. business development team. I couldn’t be happier for him. [Our own way 🙌] Key project in Alaska!🛣 Winter has definitely come to North America, where most of our activities are on hold and awaiting better weather conditions before they resume! Take the Sterling Highway upgrade program on which Colas is working, for example. Since it was first built in the 1940s, this major highway for the Kenai Peninsula, in southern Alaska, has become increasingly congested, particularly in the summertime. This has resulted in safety concerns for users. Once spring rolls around, our teams will start up again on this long-term project (expected to be finished by the end of 2028). The planned works include creating overtaking lanes and wildlife crossings and building a 15-km extension to the road. Read this article and many more about our projects worldwide in the latest issue of our Colas magazine, Routes: Magazine Routes n°50 (https://swll.to/ReadHere) #CreatingConnections #WeOpenTheWay #ColasDares
