We got a new kitten this weekend.
Just for giggles, after reading this mornings' PYMNTS article about the CE 100 Index, I looked at the Affirm options when purchasing my Whisker Litter Robot ...I was shocked to see a message that I approved for $8000 in purchases at the Litter Robot website. 🤯 First, that is a lifetime of litter...but second (and most importantly), $8000.00 💵 was "approved" in less than 20 seconds with Affirm BNPL. No firm credit check
* Affirm's CEO, Max Levchin, touts BNPL as a good thing for consumers offering "..an alternative to high-interest credit cards".
I call BS. 🐂
POS BNPL offerings do NOT set the consumer up for success and is, in fact, a wolf in sheep's clothing. BNPL options are being positioned as a smart alternative at checkout with banners like "no interest", and "no credit check"...but most consumers do not take the time to read the fine print when they click the checkout button. If they did, they would read that may be agreeing to up to 36% APR, as well as fees for late or rescheduled payments. There is no way to track how many BNPL plans one is really on, and it is incredibly easy to overspend.
