Luke Littler's phenomenal success in getting to the World Darts Championship Final this week resonates with me in so many ways. Believe it or not, the young Robert 'Newt' Newry, was on the oche in front of a Birmingham crowd over 30 years ago with none other than the 'Crafty Cockney' himself, the late and great Eric Bristow. Unlike Luke The Nuke, I have no real talent for darts and was utterly destroyed, but like Luke, Eric was humble and generous with his post match encouragement. I knew though that my skills lay elsewhere! This is what as TA professionals and hiring managers we can, and should, take away from this week's championship final: 1. Skills come in many forms. Luke clearly has incredible eye-hand co-ordination (hard skill) yet what got him to the final was as much his ability to handle pressure, quick thinking, and self-belief (soft skills). Add to that, his humbleness, unpretension and determination (more soft skills), all of which meant he rapidly became an audience and media favourite (key to sponsorship). Once again we are reminded that experience and hard skills alone do not equal success. 2. He gave hope and belief to thousands of people who have potential that you can make it to the top by demonstrating what you are capable of. This is the joy and brilliance of an 'open' competition. It's not just for the top seeds with lots of experience. If we approached hiring in the same way, how many Luke's would we discover and give opportunity to? 3. Potential needs nuturing. Luke has a great coach and received lots of encouragement. There is talent and capability out there and the role of a hiring manager today is not simply to 'manage' but also to 'develop'. In a world short of digital skills and growing social inequality, hiring for potential and developing skills should be the goal of every organisation. So as you prepare for 2024 and new goals, skills-based hiring will be on many of your company plans - think carefully about how you can open up your talent pipeline to the 'Lukes' of the world. It’s been a minute since I’ve done this. This is me at 24 years old. Associate Art Auctioneer on my second of five cruise ships I would work on after graduating college. Living an extended life”college” experience as someone said earlier this week. Only difernce is we were selling $100-300k in fine art a cruise. From Britto Boxes to Rembrandt etchings, it was exillerating. My degree in history from Rider University was put to use right away as I sold the great “Masters” and traveled the world. Italy, Spain, France, Malta, Greece, Morocco, Egypt just to name a few stops. My experiences from 14-23 had prepared me for this. Years of working 12 hour days in tee shirt shops on the Seaside Heights boardwalk really kick started my sales skills and ability to build rapport with almost anyone. All of this is to say, I speak the language of many industries. Not highlighted here is selling Cadillacs, Medical Media, Corporate Events at Luxury Distinations, and Fine Jewelry. All tales for another day. Each one of these ventures came with significant amount of research and training. I am endlessly thankful for the companies that invested in me. D&I is always at the forefront of my mind. This week I was really lucky to attend a one hour session on the subject, the external speaker was great. Last night, I decided to go late night shopping in Leeds for some last minute holiday clothes (I fly this weekend) and I had two completely different conversations with staff in shops… 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀: 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁: “This bikini is nice, are you going on holiday?” 𝗠𝗲: “Yes, I go to Monaco on Sunday” 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁: “Oh! That’s where the Formula 1 takes place isn’t it? Is your husband making you go there? I bet you’re not into Formula 1” My face 🙄 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀: 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁: “Are you going on holiday soon?” 𝗠𝗲: “I go to Monaco on Sunday this weekend!” 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁: “Oh amazing! Where they race in Formula 1? Are you a Formula 1 fan?” My face 😃 Im pretty sure the staff member in shop 1 didn’t mean any harm. The two things I wanted to point out from this was number 1, do not assume everyone is heterosexual. I do have a husband, but if I had a wife I might have taken offence to that. My advice would be to always ask, or say partner if you’re unsure. The second is do not assume people are not into certain sports (or any other subjects for that matter) Those that know me know I’m a 𝗛𝗨𝗚𝗘 Formula 1 fan! So today, or this weekend, or next week, I ask that you keep unconscious bias at the forefront of your minds. After wrapping up my first two major event gigs this summer in Australia, The AO and Formula 1 GP, I've had a chance to kick back and reflect on what a crazy journey it's been as a newbie in the industry.
