Is Bigger Always Better? Lessons from AI Planning Algorithms In a world obsessed with newer and bigger models, it's easy to assume that technological advancements always mean better performance. But sometimes, the past holds powerful lessons. Take Fast Downward, an AI planning algorithm from 2011, for example. Despite being over a decade old, this algorithm significantly outperforms some of today’s newer models in terms of both cost-effectiveness and overall performance. This raises an important question: Are newer, larger models really worth the extra resources? Or have we reached a point where the sheer complexity of modern models is overshadowing the simple brilliance of older technologies? It’s a reminder that in AI—and in business—it’s not always about what’s new. Sometimes, revisiting tried-and-true methods can yield better results, offering a balance of efficiency and effectiveness that modern approaches seem to overlook. What do you think? #GPT4o Vs #O1Series #AIModels I believe many of us are familiar with "Thinking, Fast and Slow " by Daniel Kahneman, which illustrates how the human brain operates in two modes: Mode 1: Fast thinking – quick, instinctive, and automatic Mode 2: Slow thinking – deliberate, rational, and analytical Earlier GPT model versions focused more on fast thinking—quick responses and pattern recognition. Now, with advancements in the O1 series, we see a shift toward slow thinking, emphasizing deeper reasoning, rationality, and more nuanced decision-making capabilities. This is what you should know: 👉 1) The O1 model is trained using reinforcement learning (#RL) to 'think' before responding, leveraging a private chain of thought. The longer it thinks, the better it performs on reasoning tasks, adding a new dimension for scaling #AISystems by enhancing problem-solving capabilities. 👉 2) That said, O1 models aren’t always better than models like #GPT4o. Many tasks don’t require deep reasoning, and in those cases, a faster, more instinctive GPT-4o response may be more efficient. Much like how humans use both fast (System 1) and slow (System 2) thinking depending on the situation, AI models now also balance between quick, pattern-based responses and more deliberate, rational processes. #AI #AIModels #GenAI #AITrends

What does it take to build a successful AI product? Answers vary widely based on use-case and who you ask. So I went back to first principles and tried to come up with the simplest possible framework to capture good practices in AI product thinking. Although the individual elements sound simple, in practice (1) they each have their own set of complexities and are still active areas of research, and (2) making all the pieces coexist together at once is extremely challenging. The only 5 things you need to succeed with Gen Ai. 1) Remember it's a long-run game. 2) Focus on the 8% changes instead of expecting magic to happen all over. 3) use the 80/20 rule to choose the 5 tools that make the most impact on your efficiency. 3.1) Use those mainly. 4) Get your ass out of the FOMO cycle, it's created to get you to buy more instead of achieving more. 5) Enjoy the ride and deeply explore the tools you chose in number 3 to augment your work. #ai #scale #growth #fomo
