🌟 🔭 Reflecting on Berlin Science Week 2024: A Hub of Innovation and Dialogue 🧪 🌟 Looking at this year's Berlin Science Week, it's inspiring to see how the festival serves as a vibrant platform for scientific exchange and societal engagement. Two events I attended were held at Holzmarkt and WZB, each contributing uniquely to the festival's theme of "Common Ground." Circular Economy (CE) by INAM at Holzmarkt: This event was a beacon of innovation, showcasing how new materials and technologies are paving the way for a sustainable future. The discussions highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing the CE, emphasizing the need for a "value change" alongside the value chain. Glad to have met movers in this space, Oliver Hasse and Barbora Balcarova, who shared their insights on what's up next in the scene of CE and Open Innovation. I also appreciate learning from IHK Berlin's Andreas Kubala that #digitalization and related infrastructure is a real need according to 66% of their survey's respondents. "Bedrohte Wissenschaft" at Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin fuer Sozialforschung (WZB): This event tackled the pressing issue of threats to scientific freedom and the role of science in bridging societal divides. It was a call to action for participants to explore their beliefs and engage in meaningful dialogue, with quite a few, even poignant, questions raised by the audience. Research-innovation-growth-prosperity - have we laid the right foundations or do we need to speed up innovation to survive in an intensifying global technology competition? I am really excited to discuss these and other questions with expert colleagues from industry, science and policy. Sometimes, the simplest ideas have the greatest impact. "Be My Eyes" started from one person’s experience with vision loss and a desire to help others facing similar challenges. The app connects blind or visually impaired individuals with volunteers who can assist through video calls, making everyday tasks like identifying items in the kitchen so much easier. What I love about this is how it turns helping into something we can all do, no matter how busy we are. Inspired? 💫 We are thrilled to share the highlights from the first edition of the Trento Open Festival at School of Innovation! With 23 speakers, 6 keynote speakers, 5 panels, 6 workshops, and 2 educational labs for children and teens, this event focused on the three Os: Open Data, Open Hardware, and Open Source Software, exploring the vast opportunities they unlock for innovation. 👥 We attracted a diverse and predominantly young audience, with over 100 participants each day! Ivonne Forno, President of HIT - Hub Innovazione Trentino, remarked, "HIT's mission finds full expression in events like these, where research and business stakeholders engage with the public on themes and approaches such as Free Software and Open Technologies. These initiatives enable economic development and regional well-being through collaboration and community-building practices." - ‘TRENTO OPEN FESTIVAL - Freedom to Innovate’ was promoted by HIT - Hub Innovazione Trentino, in collaboration with the Università di Trento, Fondazione Bruno Kessler - FBK and Fondazione Ampioraggio, as part of the European project ZOOOM on 3Os and IP and with the support of PagoPA S.p.A.. 🌟 Vision Weekend 2024: A Gathering of Visionary Minds 🌟 This past weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to attend Vision Weekend, an annual conference organized by #foresightinstitute at Bückeburg Palace in Germany. The event brought together visionaries, researchers, and innovators, all united by a common goal: to explore and create paths to progress for a better future. 🌍 The main conference track, "Paths to Progress," featured presentations from Foresight's core community, delving into areas such as #LongevityScience, 🧬💻 #MolecularComputing, 🧠🔌 #Neurotechnology, 🔒💻 #Cryptography, ⚡🌍 #EnergyInnovation, 🚀🌌 #SpaceExploration, and strategies for driving innovation. The breakout sessions allowed for deep dives into specific paths to progress and fostered a vibrant exchange of ideas and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Engaging with brilliant minds from various fields was incredibly enriching. 💡 Networking with like-minded individuals who share a passion for creating a better world was one of the most valuable aspects of the event. The connections forged have the potential to catalyze collaborations and accelerate progress. 🤝 As the weekend drew to a close, the conference united once again to compare paths to progress and explore cross-domain insights. The collective wisdom and determination were truly inspiring. 🌈 I did try to cement my status as the loyal knight who boldly supported England's quest for Euro glory later that evening in Berlin, just as the castle's knights did for their kingdom centuries ago – though alas, this time football didn't quite make it home. I guess you could say the Three Lions' armor had a few chinks in it! 🏰⚽😄 #Futuretechnology
