Reach for the STARS!!!…
The wisdom of S Club 7.
Many disco moons ago, I did my first freelance gig for the BBC, which strutted onto the design dance-floor in the shimmy, shimmy, shake form of an S Club 7 annual.
It’s still one of my favourite things I’ve ever done. Besides dancing.
Obviously I was delighted with the design having complete free reign (all constructed under a giant Sylvester and Tweety Pie umbrella, that’s another story), which has always worked out well for my way of creating, for the client and audience (the one’s that really matter).
Being a HUGE fan/lover of film, I like to use analogies from that world, but given few have watched the amount I have, they can stall like a John Deere lawnmower (The Straight Story, arguably David Lynch’s best film), but most will understand the 'method acting' approach.
This process is basically how I’ve approached every brief there was, and will be. Often devilling into worlds/markets I had zero knowledge of, absorbing the knowledge that half the population would already know (or will learn about), that I had profound ignorance about, as in the case of working on Tena.
The research for any and all briefs became method (design) acting, you fully immersed yourself into as much of the character (audience) as possible, you became the customer. Your performance was as good as your research, empathy and integrity.
It also meant you could become anyone, if you were willing to put in the work, time and sincerity. You knew your actions were right for the part, as you were the character.
Performance (results) was fundamentally dependant on how much genuine effort and openness one is willing to commit to the role. Giving your all, or just ChatGPTing it in.
Effort is ultimately a life style choice, it’s up to the individual how much they care and add to the performance, telling the story. Maybe that nuance no one will overtly notice, but adds massive of subconscious integrity, is what actually resonates with the viewer. That willingness to go those extra steps…
I’ve previously posted about some of the AMAZING panels and presentations I saw at the D&AD Awards, and now you can see them too. They can help you get to higher plains, deeper insights and fuller empathy with millions of people, if you put in the time, and actively listen.
Some absolute gems for me were:
No 21 Peter Saville: Authorship and Creating Icons
No 08 Beyond Boundaries and Binaries: World Building in the Metaverse
No 17 Walter Campbell: Ten Things That Made Me Feel I Had To Do Better
No 05 Andy Gent: A Prometheus Forgery: The Craft of Puppet Making
No 23 Changing Landscapes: Tech & Creativity
No 30 Humanising Brands with Creativity
No 16 Jury Insights: Impact, Sponsored by HP Industrial Graphics
But maybe just watch them all.
Because as some very wise folk once pronounced…
‘Climb every mountain higher
Reach for the stars’
