At White Label Consultancy, we are proud to collaborate on AI4Gov, an EU-funded initiative focused on leveraging AI for evidence-based innovations while tackling pressing ethical issues like discrimination and biases in democratic societies. In our efforts to raise awareness on this topic, we launched a blog series focusing on the regulatory and ethical dimensions of AI. Part one of our analysis delved into the evolution of AI regulation within the EU and its alignment with fundamental rights (available on our website, here: https://lnkd.in/dtNGVTQ9). Part two shifted the focus from the EU to examine how AI is regulated in the U.S., UAE, and China, exploring how they balance technological progress with legal obligations (available on our website here: https://lnkd.in/dHX38eUh). In this third session, we delve deeper into the critical issue of biases embedded in AI algorithms. We explore the distinction between key terms, such as bias and discrimination, and their implications for inequitable outcomes among vulnerable groups. Drawing on this understanding, we navigate the complex issue of algorithmic discrimination and examine the potential impact of human oversight, both beneficial and detrimental. Additionally, we pave the way for our next and final session, where we will discuss concrete ways to promote and assess fairness, inclusivity, and gender equality in artificial intelligence. As we celebrate International Women's Day, it is timely to reflect on the harms of AI in perpetuating and amplifying gender inequality and societal stereotypes. As outlined in a recent Council of Europe study (link below), existing mechanisms for addressing algorithmic bias are inadequate, and should be intertwined with AI technologies for promoting equality and robust human rights based impact assessment throughout the AI lifecycle.
