‘Young at heart: Becoming a nation with children at its centre in 10 courageous steps’ - The RSA (The royal society for arts, manufactures and commerce) Just imagine . . . the government comes together to declare that for too long children have been ignored, and that they have the courage to become child-centred nation. From idea to action . . . If a country made this declaration, what would be the practical next steps? Here are 10 key considerations to guide leaders towards becoming a child-centred nation. 1. Listening to children 2. Protecting the right to play 3. Sparking and developing creativity in children 4. Ensuring safety 5. Equipping children as peacemakers 6. Bringing hope and skills for climate adaptation 7. Designing with children instead of for children 8. Learning languages, place and local understanding 9. Putting value on the public good of good parenting 10. Considering international relations and foreign policy Here are some questions to sharpen government’s performance and move towards becoming a child-centred nation: Minister for Children: Who in my government is responsible for children? Who is listening to them, designing with them, and taking steps to improve the lives of children in my country? Foundations: Have we considered safety and access to essential resources? Are we building the attitudes, institutions and structures for a peaceful society? Long-term view: Are child-lens investment approaches being used? Are we considering the countries children will inherit? Valuing social good: Are children seen as agents that simply reduce the working capacity of their parents and thus tax revenues? Do we recognise the value to our country of raising children? Learning: Are changes required to our educational systems and curriculum? Working flat out to get everything done, so didn't manage to message yesterday, so today two reflections with three days to go! Firstly on the central importance for me of co-production, of working with children and families to shapre and improve our services and their plans, of listening deeply and responding to what we hear. Proud of the many ways in which we have strengthened this at the heart of our approach in Tower Hamlets, with particular examples to highlight: our Young Scrutineers (award winning - see photo below) for our Safeguarding Children Partnership; the Our Time Youth Forum ensuring the voices of children and young people with SEND are heard locally as well as on a London and National stage; our Family Group Conferencing which goes from strength to strength and is one of the keys to supporting children to remain in the care of their family network; and our strengthened Corporate Parenting with care leaving made a protected characteristic at Cabinet following the powerful advocacy of three of our young people. Secondly and briefly on the need for honesty and rigour in all we do. Honesty to face up to shortfalls without excuses, rather with a clear and direct recognition of what needs to change as a first step towards improvement. And rigour in our attention to detail, determination to follow through and clear accountability. Characteristics of the momentum of our improvement plans both for SEND and Youth Justice.

There is still a long way to go but having this recognised today is a great step to seeing all children access this fundamental right across the world 🌍 and help everyone to understand it’s critical importance in education and at home. PLAY IS NEVERJUST PLAY Play is a fundamental right; it builds resilience, instils confidence and helps children develop.But children need time to play. That’s where we need policies, training and funding to get play integrated into education and community settings.Play heals through learning, life skills and psychosocial well-being. That’s why there must be investment into diverse, inclusive and safe play spaces, extending access to all, especially the most vulnerable and marginalised children.There are so many reasons we should all be celebrating the power of play.

This looks a great training for anyone working with youth! Designed with research and policy advocacy in mind, "Disrupting Adultism: Building Authentic Youth Coalitions" training will delve into the concept of adultism, exploring its implications and how it can inadvertently create barriers in youth engagement. More importantly, we will discuss strategies to disrupt these patterns in order to foster an environment that truly values and incorporates youth perspectives. We will explore strategies to foster genuine partnerships with young people, enabling them to become active participants in decision-making processes. By the end of this training, participants will have an introduction to the knowledge and tools needed to build authentic youth coalitions, ensuring that our future leaders are not just seen, but heard, respected, and actively involved in shaping the world around them.  https://lnkd.in/gTp5Ppmp
