Here is edition #2 of the RefComp Insider! We asked 100+ refrigeration compliance experts ‘What is your average cost of quarterly store-wide leak inspections?’ The answer: Anywhere from $500 to >$1500 And the conclusion is - relying solely on point solutions is ineffective! The industry needs a comprehensive, integrated approach to refrigeration compliance that goes beyond periodic inspections. Why is this important? Cost Efficiency: Integrated solutions can reduce the overall cost of compliance. Proactive Maintenance: Continuous monitoring helps in identifying potential issues before they become costly problems. Regulatory Compliance: Staying ahead of regulations ensures smoother operations and avoids penalties. Want to know more about a holistic refrigerant management and leak detection solution? Charging a CO2 rack correctly is crucial to avoid costly mistakes. Before you begin, ensure there's enough vapor in the system, above the triple point of 60-61 PSIG (4.2 bar), so you can safely add liquid. Use the correct fitting, such as a CGA 320, connected to transcritical hoses and gauges, and charge the liquid slowly to prevent pressure drops. If you're doing this for the first time, take your time and be cautious. I'd love to hear your questions or comments on how you charge—liquid line or suction line? One of the things about our solution we are most proud of is that it is not a one-and-done transaction, like with a shirt or a pair of shoes. The #refrigeration performance and #energyefficiency optimizations provide long-term value year-after-year in reduced maintenance costs and lower electric bills. Pittsfield Rye, operated by the Robbins family, in Pittsfield, MA is one of those customers that have been seeing benefits for years. At their facility, they have 14 different refrigerated zones, each with their own temperature requirements and operating conditions. As you can imagine, constantly managing all of these and ensuring their individual conditions are met is a huge time suck. It’s basically a second job, but the Robbins couldn’t afford to hire someone whose sole responsibility was to stare at all of the different systems all day. Fortunately, NRM’s solution does just that, while also improving performance, enhancing troubleshooting, and helping the Robbins keep immaculate records for HACCP requirements. All of their zones are now watched 24/7 for any potential mechanical issues, and their operational data is presented to the Robbins on a live dashboard online. In addition, the powerful cooling controls recoup about $20K from their electric bill every year that otherwise would've gone to excess energy costs. “Before we purchased RSM, it was literally a full-time job manually checking the temperatures of all of our refrigeration. We have five trailers, a blast freezer, a utility freezer, and a walk-in cooler. With RSM, I can simply check my iPad and have all of that information at my fingertips 24 hours a day, anywhere I am. I love the system and would highly recommend it.” #rethinkrefrigeration #refrigerationcontrolsandmonitoring #coolingsolutions #energysavings #masssave

There are hundreds of things #smallbusiness owners need to manage every single day -- payroll, scheduling, inventory, sales goals, customer service, and so much more. For a small business with #refrigeration such as a #conveniencestore, #liquorstore, or #restaurant, this includes the safety of their cold product. Often, these refrigeration systems are managed passively; if the air in the walk-in cooler feels cold, then the system must be working correctly. And only when an obvious issue presents itself (like the compressor blowing up) is the system looked at more closely. But it doesn't have to be that way. With NRM's web-based monitoring tools, you can keep a bird's eye view of how your system is operating 24/7 from anywhere. And get alerts immediately when an issue is first detected so you can stay ahead of it. #rethinkrefrigeration #coolingsolutions #refrigerationtech Learn more here 👇

When discovering a smashed discharge valve caused by a slug of liquid oil or refrigerant. Here's how I would tackled it: The Call: If I was called out to a refrigeration unit that had suddenly stopped working. I would talk with the customer first to see if they heard any loud noises or sudden shutdowns. Diagnosis: Initial Inspection: I would Look, Listen and touch the compressor and refrigerant lines safely. Compressor Inspection: Check temperatures and pressures and if I notice equalized pressure or lower than normal I would shut down the system safely and opened up the compressor to inspect the internal components. Discovery: If I found the discharge valve smashed, like this I would think it had been hit by a slug of liquid oil or refrigerant. Solution: System Evaluation: I would check for any wrist pin wear or cylinder damage to see if the it’s the compressor or valve plate that needs replacing. Replacement: If it was only the valves plate that was the issue that would get replaced. System Cleanup: I would make sure the system was free of any liquid returning that could cause further slugging. This included checking the oil separator and ensuring the refrigerant was at the correct charge. Outcome: Then I would start the system to get it fully functional. This experience would an excellent learning opportunity for anyone in refrigeration, showcasing the importance of understanding and addressing liquid slugging. Question for Fellow Techs: Have you encountered a smashed discharge valve due to liquid slugging? What are your best practices for preventing and dealing with this issue?
