This week marks the open access publication of our study on older adult movement speeds within Long Term Care Facilities. Led by Bronwyn Forrest and the team at University of Waterloo, our paper “Older Adult Stair and Walking Speeds from Controlled Trials as Inputs into Simulations of Retirement Home Evacuation” has been published in Collective Dynamics : https://lnkd.in/ehT_Bixr. As part of the study I completed the Pathfinder retirement home simulations (day and night scenarios with residents, visitors and staff as modelled occupants) which showed differences in predicted time to egress when inputs from this study are used relative to model defaults, demonstrating that ensuring model input parameters accurately represent segments of the older adult population is critical in rendering more realistic predicted egress outcomes.

This week marks the open access publication of our follow up study to our recent Fire Technology paper on older adult movement speeds. Led by Bronwyn Forrest and the team at University of Waterloo, our paper “Older Adult Stair and Walking Speeds from Controlled Trials as Inputs into Simulations of Retirement Home Evacuation” has been published in Collective Dynamics : https://lnkd.in/ehT_Bixr . This paper highlights descending 3-stair speeds of older adults in Ontario, Canada. Results highlight the heterogeneity of descending stair speeds in this older adult population. Aid users (canes and walkers) and those who maneuver descending stairs with a cane and the handrail comprise the slowest stair speeds. First-iteration Pathfinder retirement home simulations (day and night scenarios with residents, visitors and staff as modelled occupants) also showed differences in predicted time to egress when inputs from this study are used relative to model defaults, demonstrating that ensuring model input parameters accurately represent segments of the older adult population is critical in rendering more realistic predicted egress outcomes.

ECLISSE the pocket door system of choice for retirement apartments, assisted living housing and care home projects According to the Office of National Statistics the UK population has been steadily getting older. Currently around seventeen percent of the population is over 65 and this trend is expected to rise to over 23% by 2035. This has resulted in a strong demand for luxury care homes, retirement apartments, assisted living housing and care homes. In line with this demand we have seen an increase in orders for pocket door systems for care related projects. This is because pocket doors can be easy to use for clients with reduced mobility, in a wheelchair, with impaired vision or with reduced grip/motor skills whilst still being aesthetically pleasing. Add to this the fact that ECLISSE pocket door systems are easy to assemble and install, maintenance free, come with a 15 year guarantee and are tested to 25 years of average use, it is unsurprising that our systems have become the system of choice for care home, assisted-living and retirement projects. Updated research out of National Council on Aging and LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston show: 1. 80% of older adults (47 million households) are either financially struggling or at risk of economic insecurity in retirement 2. Nearly 50% of adults 60 and older have household incomes below the Elder Index, meaning they can't afford basic needs 3. 60% of older adults would be unable to afford two years of in-home long-term care services Definitely a sobering analysis but demonstrates the need for broad policy changes to support the economic well-being of ALL older adults and not just those at the lowest income levels.
