We Want to Do More Than Survive Winner of the 2020 Society of Professors of Education Outstanding Book Award Drawing on personal stories, research, and historical events, an esteemed educator offers a vision of educational justice inspired by the rebellious spirit and methods of abolitionists. Drawing on her life’s work of teaching and researching in urban schools, Bettina Love persuasively argues that educators must teach students about racial violence, oppression, and how to make sustainable change in their communities through radical civic initiatives and movements. She argues that the US educational system is maintained by and profits from the suffering of children of color. Instead of trying to repair a flawed system, educational reformers offer survival tactics in the forms of test-taking skills, acronyms, grit labs, and character education, which Love calls the educational survival complex. To dismantle the educational survival complex and to achieve educational freedom—not merely reform—teachers, parents, and community leaders must approach education with the imagination, determination, boldness, and urgency of an abolitionist. Following in the tradition of activists like Ella Baker, Bayard Rustin, and Fannie Lou Hamer, We Want to Do More Than Survive introduces an alternative to traditional modes of educational reform and expands our ideas of civic engagement and intersectional justice. https://lnkd.in/g2Rgexee

I'm against the Louisiana law that requires the Ten Commandments in classrooms. I'm against the Pride Flag flown in public places. Let's stop the virtue signaling and focus on the basis. Stop the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion nonsense and focus on the basis. Placing the Ten Commandments in classrooms won't do much to change lives; living your life to honor God would. I love the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and similar organizations on campuses. I love the displays of students' works and progress on the campus walls. Let's focus on teaching the students the basics, like English, Math, Science, reading, writing, respect, leadership, finances, and being responsible adults. We must stop the virtue signaling, and let's start to lead with compassion and love. Our students must not be pawns in the hands of politicians and special interest groups. You can teach your children Christian values at home. If you must display the Ten Commandments, you can do it in Christian schools. Peace and love! #CoachGbenga #students #schools #tencommandments #louisianalaw #compassion

Today, we honor National Truth and Reconciliation Day. 🧡 At Focused Forward, we believe in the power of truth, healing, and education. Today, we pause to reflect on the painful history and lasting impacts of the residential school system. This day is not just about remembering; it’s about action. Together, we must continue to amplify the voices of Indigenous communities and work towards a future rooted in equity, justice, and reconciliation. We commit to listening, learning, and supporting Indigenous-led initiatives. Every child’s voice, story, and future matters. #EveryChildMatters #TruthAndReconciliation #IndigenousRights

Well goodness, this is a real priority to push the #10Commandments on kids. So we found wearing masks was against our rights but pushing the Christian Religion on all kids is ok? Can we have real politicians that address important issues rather than religion? Teaching children religion must come from the parents; not everyone is Christian. Let's be respectful of other cultures. #GOP #WhiteChristianNationalism https://lnkd.in/eFYnubC4

One Good Thing. Learn each other’s story. Liberty is no guarantee. We belong to each other. Our differences make us beautiful. Build trust. Shine a light on the best of our community. Safeguard Democracy. Note and share the good. Sound familiar as a salve around our political divide? Rebecka Peterson, 2023 National Teacher of the year, 2022 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year, shared her perspective in her keynote address at the recent Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction excellent State Superintendent’s Conference on Special Education and Pupil Services Leadership in the Wisconsin Dells. We can all learn to better focus on the good rather than on what’s wrong, what brings us together, rather than what separates us. Civil discourse, learning each other’s story, creating connections, changing the narrative. Try Rebecka’s technique; at the end of the day, write down one good thing about the day. Be curious, learn the stories of others and share your own. It will take practice, but in the end, it may change your perspective to the positive. We could all use a little more of that! Wisconsin Alliance for Civic Trust WisACT works toward similar principles, building trust in the electoral process, engaging in civil discourse, and building relationships.
