Misinformation and disinformation are listed as the most severe global risk anticipated over the next two years in the World Economic Forum's new Global Risks Report 2024. The WEF report details serious potential consequences, including real harm to some of the most vulnerable people in the world. I like this graphic which shows the interplay of misinfo, disinfo, and other digital and tech risks, but implicitly underscores how our response must be collective, multi-functional and networked. https://lnkd.in/e9VVP2_f

Want a quick read of the #wef Global Risk Report 2024? Here's a summary of findings on #cyber inequity, the adverse risks of #AI and how we respond to extreme weather events caused by #climatechange from my World Economic Forum colleagues Gayle Markovitz and Sophie Heading
It's that time in January when the Global Risks Report lands and we see what's in store for the next 12 months. But the report is not a crystal ball and the risks don't lead to inevitable outcomes. The moment a risk is identified - it's no longer the risk that it once was - because we tend to do something about it. Saadia Zahidi wisely reminds us to heed the risks that sit 'under the radar' - they tend to get less focus in the mitigation efforts. Watch the briefing here https://lnkd.in/e5sk77XZ And for insights into how to tackle three of 2024's key risks (#cyber insecurity, extreme #weather and adverse outcomes of #AI technologies) - my colleagues at World Economic Forum bring some solutions to the table here https://lnkd.in/eKkw-6ut #risks24 #wef24 Gill Einhorn Benjamin Cedric Larsen, PhD Seán Doyle Sophie Heading Ellissa Cavaciuti-Wishart Marsh McLennan Zurich Insurance

WEF Warns of Cyber Attack Leading to Systemic Collapse of the Global Financial System A report published by the WEF-Carnegie Cyber Policy Initiative calls for the merging of Wall Street banks, their regulators and intelligence agencies as necessary to confront an allegedly imminent cyber attack that will collapse the existing financial system. the World Economic Forum and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace coproduced a report that warned that the global financial system was increasingly vulnerable to cyber attacks. Advisers to the group that produced the report included representatives from the Federal Reserve, the Bank of England, the International Monetary Fund, Wall Street giants such as JPMorgan Chase, and Silicon Valley behemoths such as Amazon. The ominous report was published just months after the World Economic Forum had conducted a simulation of just such an event—a cyber attack that brings the global financial system to its knees—in partnership with Russia’s largest bank, which is due to jumpstart that country’s economic transformation by launching its own central bank–backed digital currency. The largest information-sharing organization of the financial industry, the Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center (FS-ISAC), whose known members include the Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Citigroup, warned that nation-state hackers and cybercriminals are poised to jointly attack the global financial system. The CEO of this organization had previously given the same warning, which was published in the World Economic Forum-Carnegie Endowment (WEF-Carnegie) report. Such coordinated simulations and warnings from those who dominate the current ailing financial system are obviously a cause for concern, particularly given that the World Economic Forum is well-known for its Event 201 simulation about a global coronavirus pandemic that took place just months prior to the COVID-19 crisis. https://lnkd.in/g8zbzKGy

Important discussion and commentary from Sasha Havlicek Joshua Tucker Deepti Doshi. https://lnkd.in/giXxarBD TLDR: what we have today are digital Boeings with highly concentrated returns that have also contributed to broader economic+societal fragility. We need to be investing, innovating, and focusing on solutions that strengthen the quality of our information & social environments → trust → economic resiliency. Sasha "...it will be good business for those of you investing...to invest in safety by design...we have to remember we are in a geopolitical contest right now...the very survival of liberal democracy is in question and the internet is the arena in which that battle is being played out. Authoritarian States are very well aware of that and invest heavily in shaping our information ecosystem in their image and we must do the same...[Safety by design] is essentially a risk-based approach. When you develop a technology, a business, any form of business, you should be responsible for thinking through the risks to society, to safety of your product...[it is] essentially just asking of the tech sector the same set of requirements that we ask of almost...every sector..." Deepti "we need different sorts of incentive structures that govern and incentivize the behavior...VC's looking for the hockey stick growth trajectory puts pressure...to prioritize growth and engagement when in fact we do want them to be taking into consideration these kind of long-term systemic issues and so...innovation in both the capital structures but also the business models..." Joshua "...this...comes back to...EU’s Digital Services Act (#DSA)...requiring data to be shared...there are potentially ways to interpret this in a much more drug-based manner which is the way we test drugs is we do...randomized control trials...we use experiments...we know the platforms conduct tons and tons and tons of experiments before they roll out new features...this data exists...it's just that at this point in time the only way those tests ever get showed to the public is if they're leaked...this is where regulation could play a huge role...surface these tests and, even better, get people who aren't employees of the platforms designing the tests and...putting them in the public domain so that our regulators can be informed...what we need is the political will to move it forward...the most important thing...is to understand the distinction between anecdotal description which is what we get...on talk shows...and rigorous research...we need to prioritize the latter in informing our policy but I think it can also give...entrepreneurs and investors a real leg up and understanding..." In a toxic world- trust is everything! Time to understand, to take responsibility and to take actions. ”The report listed misinformation and disinformation as the most severe risk over the next two years, highlighting how rapid advances in technology also are creating new problems or making existing ones worse.”https://lnkd.in/dNWCBE6e The Global Risk Report 2024 from World Economic Forum here: https://lnkd.in/dyenYgbi

The World Economic Forum's latest Global Risk Perception Survey reveals an increasingly volatile landscape, with the pervasive threat of disinformation topping the list of the most severe risks in the short term. The report highlights the interconnectedness of societal polarization, economic strains and unchecked technology, all of which can, and likely will, contribute to the amplification of disinformation among foreign and domestic actors. “The potential impact on elections worldwide over the next two years is significant," Marsh McLennan's Carolina Klint warned in the survey. "It could lead to elected governments’ legitimacy being put into question, and this, in turn, could threaten democratic processes and lead to further social polarization, riots, strikes, or even intra-state violence." Beyond what it could mean for elections, the findings also suggest perceptions of reality will become more polarized, infiltrating public discourse on issues ranging from public health to social justice. The risk of domestic propaganda and censorship is expected to rise in response to the undermining of truth, granting governments increased control over information flows. Disinformation is the top world danger expected to play out in the next couple of years, according to the 2024 Global Risks Perception Survey conducted by the World Economic Forum, in an effort to explore the most severe risks anticipated by nearly 1,500 experts across academia, business, government, the international community and civil society. It has risen rapidly in rankings to first place for the two-year time frame, and the risk is likely to become more acute as elections in several economies take place this year. #EDMOeu #MedDMO #Factcheck #GlobalRisks

“We started off by asking the question ‘How do you fight mis- and dis-information?’ and we’ve actually realized that it’s…trying to define the undefinable. What we’re really talking about is…taking all the stuff that we learned about defending democracy from the last 100, 200…years and reapplying them to a digital idiom.” 🌟Panel: Emerging Lessons: What works (and doesn’t) in combating mis- and dis-information🌟 Peter Pomerantsev of SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University, moderator, summarizes this panel at Keseb’s 2023 Global Democracy Champions’ Summit with participants Rose Jackson of the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab) and Pedro Telles of Quid. Rose noted that the fight against mis- and dis-information is not new to the combat for democracy, but, new technological tools, such as artificial intelligence and “deepfakes” represent unprecedented rising threats against democracy. These new threats call for new, innovative methods to counter them. Rose pointed to the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), which created new legal obligations for internet and social media companies to combat disinformation, as “probably the most significant democratically aligned attempt” at translating efforts in the “offline world” to digital environments. Pedro pointed to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court’s new mechanism to force platforms to take down certain kinds of disinformation as a second effective enforcement method. 📽️Watch the full panel conversation and explore other sessions from our 2023 Summit here: https://lnkd.in/egfw78fS 💡Read our insights brief on actionable insights from the full Summit here: https://lnkd.in/eP5cTeJv #democracychampions #democracy
