Misinformation is rife online - and we have seen first hand the horrific consequences of this in the past few weeks. In the below Ardent article, I explore how we need to build greater critical thinking skills in order to identify fake news and extremist content. Not to lighten criminal behavior or activity, but don't be distracted. Nothing was heroic about dodging a bullet that was never intended for you. It's real humans out here dying from firearms that are intended for them. The veil must be unmasked. Any presidential candidate, position or elective is highly protected. Fake news follows more media attention. It's an old tactic for more views on one party than the other. Negative news flows quicker...regular or positive news doesn't grab the attention span long enough to stay in your subconscious mind. It's free publicity... It goes without paying the cost for campaigning into certain regions and areas. Political polarization (spelled polarisation in British English, African and Caribbean English, and New Zealand English) is the divergence of political attitudes away from the center, towards ideological extremes.[1][2][3] Scholars distinguish between ideological polarization (differences between the policy positions) and affective polarization (an emotional dislike and distrust of political out-groups).[4] The prevalence of fake news has increased with the recent rise of social media, especially the Facebook News Feed, and this misinformation is gradually seeping into the mainstream media. Fake news or information disorder is false or misleading information (misinformation, including disinformation, propaganda, and hoaxes) presented as news. Fake news often has the aim of damaging the reputation of a person or entity, or making money through advertising revenue. Also, in watching the video and having a military background as I do, every shooter knows to never take your eye off the target. The theatrics of the Sniper on top of the building to look beyond his scope as if the target would be seen clearer with the naked eye is not standard protocol. Then to discharge the weapon without completely gathering and identifying the target again through the scope lens was definitely a improper approach to disarming a true threat.

When we, the journalists and media personnel, are being biased, benefited or paid somehow for such assignments/ reports to intentionally expose all the negatives of a person, group, community, and/or state of target! Are not we and the power/ masterminds behind our fake/ false, reports, statements and propaganda tainted with unethical practices and against morality and/or humanity! If we, the reporters / media personnel ourselves, were really of moral character, sincere, honest and responsible enough about our professions , then why could we not speak with minimum impartially about the global political leaders who are accused and well known for committing crimes against humanity! We rather suppress all their ill motives, evil deeds with naked support , hypocrisy, double standard role, and thereby defending them and their evil deeds, always telling a lie with fake confidence, pride and even acting otherwise offensive from behind and behind the screen/scene secretly and cowardly!

This chapter, building on my master’s thesis, will be included in the forthcoming Cambridge Handbook of the Right to Freedom of Thought (edited by Patrick O’Callaghan and Bethany Shiner). We look at the relationship between online manipulation, mental autonomy, and freedom of thought. We support the claim that some forms of online manipulation can violate the right to freedom of thought.
