'Getting Going with Biochar' is the name that occurred to me when I wanted a name for an orientation internship program for young agricultural students. What started as an attempt to hire a couple of student interns, turned into a highly subscribed and applied-for internship program. We ended up interviewing over 100 participants and expanded the online internship program to engage 40 young minds on Biochar. We offered different time slots each week for the participants to get together on GMeet, and share their week’s learnings. Many heard about Biochar for the first time through this internship. Many made their first-ever batch of Biochar at their homes and farms. During weekly calls, the participants interacted with experts in the Biochar field like Dr. Sai Bhaskar Reddy Nakka, from Geo Spirit, Kathleen Draper Former Board Chair of IBI, Flo Oberhofer from PyroCCS, AMBE PASCAL, Abhilasha from Circonomy. 12-week long online internship program where the initial weeks were spent learning Biochar and its various properties, followed by understanding and preparing, charging, and using Biochar. Toward the end, each intern picked a problem statement and worked on it to come up with amazing data and projects. They have come a long way and so have I with the help of these young interns. After over 60 hours of weekly group calls, 1:1s, Project Discussions, Midway submissions, and Final Submissions. Out of 40 that were offered the virtual internship, around 15 successfully reached the finish line. Delighted to share all the content the interns have created with all of you. 🌟 As we conclude our summer internship program, we are proud of the contributions made by Mariann and Tia Marlen from NTNU. Their dedication and fresh perspectives have had a positive impact at OTS.   Mariann, with her background in Biomarine Innovation, and Tia, with her expertise in Economics and Administration, have demonstrated outstanding commitment and enthusiasm.   Here are some of the tasks they have contributed to: - Implementing the ISO 14001 management system - Improving the company's environmental policy and associated goals. - Developing a practical return scheme for OTS products. - Further pursuing sustainable recycling solutions for OTS products.   We asked Mariann and Tia to share their thoughts and experiences from their time at OTS:   Mariann: What was the most exciting project you worked on during your internship? "I must emphasize the effort put into setting up the return system for discarded products. This initiative has been very exciting and has highlighted the importance of industrial symbiosis in achieving circularity."   How has this experience influenced your career aspirations in the field of biomarine innovation? "This experience has expanded the range of companies I am considering for job applications after my studies. With my strong interest in marine biology and aquatic ecosystems, it has been fascinating to see how these can be integrated into various aspects at OTS."   Can you share a memorable moment or learning experience from your time here? "It’s hard to pick just one moment. After thoroughly reviewing OTS's procedures, I requested to join the production process for a day. It was very rewarding to see how the procedures I had worked on were applied in practice."   Tia: What insights did you gain about the maritime industry that you didn't expect? “I have to say the desire and need within the maritime industry to implement sustainable solutions. I also realized how crucial it is to make gradual, realistic changes – it's not always the big steps that leads to the best results, but rather the small, manageable improvements that make a difference over time.”   How do you think your work here will impact your future studies and career in economics and administration? “My work at OTS has given me an advantage when it comes to sustainable business practices. I’ve learned the importance of effective procedures and environmental focus. I can say I feel better prepared to handle the environmental challenges from an administrative perspective.   3. What advice would you give to future interns at OTS? “My best advice is to start early with your tasks, get to know the company and what they do. Wendy Sangucho Loachamin, an #OASEIntern at Ever Fresh Fruit Co, writes: I had an “aha” moment while observing how pails were cleaned. Since I already knew what kind of nozzle (pressure and flow) was used and how many pails were cleaned annually, I can estimate how much water is used to clean pails in a year by measuring the time it takes to clean one pail. Up to this point, I thought that the only way I could obtain this data was using an ultrasonic flow meter, but then I realized that there are other approaches as well, each with advantages and disadvantages. The #OASE program has provided opportunities to learn from people with years of experience in the food and other industries, improve my communication skills, and become less shy and more assertive. Some view it as stressful and labor-intensive without adequate compensation. However, others see it as an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience. I choose to focus on the positive aspects. When asked what advice he would give to someone interested in pursuing a career in Environmental Science, Carter said: “Do as many different internships as you can! I say this because careers in environmental science are extremely broad, and you can do many different things with it. Ended my internship at ID Quantique. This internship was part of the SECI (Social, Environmental and Community Internship) proposed by CentraleSupélec | McGill - Bachelor in Global Engineering, to students who finished their first year in the program. The SECI focused in targeting the SDG Goals, and to give students a perspective of the environment and sustainability aspects of society. As a quality intern, I was responsible of calculating the carbon footprint of the ID Quantique and assess environmental risks that could pose a problem to the company. This internship targetted the SDG Goal 13: Climate Action at its core. My report to ID Quantique contained lots of information on: - The company’s position in an environmental level, - The effects of environmental regulations putting in place to the company, - What it could do to reduce their footprint. I enjoyed my time contributing in the company, and I spread awareness of sustainability and enviroment friendliness in the company with my report, and hope it helps the company in the future. I cherished my time at ID Quantique, as it was my first internship working at a professional level. ——— During my internship ——— My contribution: - Calculated the CO2 impact / carbon footprint of the company from 2018 up to 2024. - Assessed evironmental risks that could affect the company. - Made an action plan that the company could base upon to reduce its carbon footprint. What I learned: - Learned to transform raw data into useful ones. - Mastered basic Excel functions. - Developped better communication skills will colleagues & understand the importance of quality management; understood the basic functions of a company. ——— Acknowledgement ——— I would like to thank Ludovic Evrard for getting contacts from different departments, so that I could get data and interview them. He also guided me to show which information is relevant and “staying on track”, so that I don’t diverge beyond the scope of my internship. I would also like thank Grégoire Ribordy for giving me small, but crucial advice to improve my final report, to communicate better to employees in the company. I thank both of them for being my mentors during my internship. Finally, I thank to all my colleagues with whom I’ve interviewed; data was crucial in calculating the carbon footprint of ID Quantique, and our discussions were interesting and informative. I now have an idea of the basic structure of the company because of that.
