Mayra Buvinic and Kelsey Ross (She/Her) have written a terrific paper for the Center for Global Development, entitled, "Promoting Women’s Financial Inclusion: A Quiet Revolution is Taking Place in the Financial Sector." Digital money solutions,non-traditional collateral options, and other innovations are "quietly" enabling greater financial inclusion, the authors have found. Multilateral development banks (MDBs) and initiatives such as the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi) have been at the forefront, working hard to eliminate gender biases and to support women-owned businesses. The success of Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi) and other such efforts highlights the power of partnerships: how can INGOs, NGOs, MDBs, and the private sector collaborate more effectively, to scale up financial inclusion efforts for women? One in four African women is an entrepreneur. Despite this spirit, there’s a US$1.7 trillion global gap between the capital women want and what they receive. A new white paper, "Women and Equitable Growth in a Resource-Constrained World," proposes solutions for closing this financing gap. 🔹 Regulatory Reforms: Governments should reform regulations to support responsible microfinance lenders serving low-income customers while still protecting people from predatory lenders. 🔹 Digital Innovation: Investing in digital infrastructure equips financial institutions with tools to assess creditworthiness beyond traditional measures. By leveraging alternative data, such as timely bill payments and participation in self-help groups, more women can access capital. 🔹 Donor Engagement: Donors should allocate funds to mitigate risk perception among lenders, spurring investment in a diverse pool of entrepreneurs. When lenders feel secure, they're more inclined to support innovative ventures. Unlocking the economic potential of women isn't just essential—it's transformative. A financial ecosystem that champions women entrepreneurs paves the way for sustainable growth and prosperity for all.

Access to capital is one of the major barriers facing women entrepreneurs. In fact, 80% of women-owned businesses with credit needs are unserved or underserved. This is equivalent to a $1.7 trillion financing gap. WEConnect International and Moody's Corporation have joined forces to break down those barriers with a proven expert-led training program, the Financing Your Growing Business Boot Camp. Since its inception in 2019, the program has generated millions of dollars of new revenue for women entrepreneurs in emerging markets around the world. In fact, last year, program participants could attribute $1.5M in new funds directly attributable to their boot camp participation. We are now looking for women business owners in 14 emerging markets for the 2024 series, as well as NEW boot camp focused on sustainability. The first sessions kick off in early June!
