In July 2024, telehealth utilization decreased nationally and in every US census region, according to FAIR Health’s Monthly Telehealth Regional Tracker. Nationally, telehealth claim lines fell from 4.89 percent of medical claim lines in June to 4.74 percent in July, a decrease of 3.0 percent. In the West, the telehealth share of medical claim lines decreased 3.3 percent; in the Midwest and Northeast, it fell 1.7 percent; and in the South, it fell 1.0 percent. The data represent the commercially insured population, excluding Medicare Fee-for-Service, Medicare Advantage and Medicaid. Today FAIR Health launched the Monthly Telehealth Regional Tracker Trending Reports, a free set of infographics that show national and regional six-month trends in telehealth. A brief released simultaneously offers a user’s guide to the Telehealth Tracker Trending Reports. The Telehealth Tracker Trending Reports are based on the Monthly Telehealth Regional Tracker, which, since May 2020, has used FAIR Health data to track how telehealth is evolving from month to month. The Telehealth Tracker has attracted widespread interest from media outlets, researchers, government officials, health plans, providers and other key healthcare stakeholders. To add another dimension to the Telehealth Tracker, and broaden its lens, FAIR Health created the Telehealth Tracker Trending Reports, which offer a window into changes over longer periods than one month. These first trending reports show national and regional trends in telehealth utilization—as measured by telehealth’s percentage of medical claim lines—and the top five telehealth diagnostic categories across each month from January to June 2024. The data represent the commercially insured population, excluding Medicare Fee-for-Service, Medicare Advantage and Medicaid. FAIR Health, Inc., the national, independent nonprofit, today announced collaborations with clinical sites at four universities under a national initiative generously funded by The John A. Hartford Foundation (JAHF). The academic centers are Penn Medicine, The Ohio State University, Emory University and the University of Rochester Medical Center. As part of this groundbreaking effort, clinicians at the four sites, each of which have achieved Age-Friendly Health Systems recognition, are engaging older patients and caregivers at the point of care with healthcare engagement and shared decision-making (SDM) tools provided by FAIR Health, which are available on FAIR Health for Older Adults (fairhealtholderadults.org). Today FAIR Health released the Opioid Tracker, a free, interactive tool tracking opioid abuse and dependence state by state. A brief released simultaneously offers a user’s guide to the Opioid Tracker. Available on FAIR Health’s website fairhealth.org, the Opioid Tracker includes a heat map representing the percentage of patients with opioid abuse and dependence diagnoses compared to all patients receiving medical services in 2023 for each state. Clicking on a state displays an infographic for that state. The infographic includes the top five procedure codes by utilization for opioid abuse and dependence, the top five procedure codes by aggregate allowed amounts for opioid abuse and dependence, the change in the percentage of patients with opioid abuse and dependence diagnoses compared to all patients receiving medical services from 2020 to 2023, and the distribution of patients with opioid abuse and dependence diagnoses by age and gender. There is also a similar infographic for the nation as a whole. The source of the data is FAIR Health’s repository of commercial healthcare claims, now at over 48 billion claim records, the largest such repository in the nation. In June 2024, telehealth utilization increased nationally and in the West, Northeast and South, but decreased in the Midwest, according to FAIR Health’s Monthly Telehealth Regional Tracker. Nationally, telehealth claim lines rose from 4.82 percent of medical claim lines in May to 4.89 percent in June, an increase of 1.5 percent. In the West, the telehealth share of medical claim lines increased 1.4 percent; in the Northeast, it rose 0.8 percent; and in the South, it rose 0.3 percent. In the Midwest, the telehealth share of medical claim lines fell 1.7 percent. From 2020 to 2023, mental health disorders in pregnant women rose 52.9 percent and substance use disorders in pregnant women increased 8.2 percent. During that same period, potential complications of pregnancy and delivery rose 19.8 percent.
